Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

I recently noticed a recurring credit card charge for $19.82 with the tag InstantCheckMate and a phone number.  Luckily they answered the phone. I thought they were a check verification service or service associated with a vendor for some other service.  They told me they were a background check company and said I had signed up in Oct last year (when I was searching for a job). They also said that the service was used last month, and they started naming off people in my direct family (and other people who are Not related to me!)

I told them I did not remember ever signing up for their service (and I dont have any records of doing so - which I *always* keep in my email files).  I told them that even if I did sign up - it was for a one-time search to see what potential employeers would see, I do NOT sign up for recurring services!

They said there was a statement in the fine print on their site that even for one-time searches you have to request cancelation, (I cannot find this statement on their site!).  They also confirmed my email address and a password that I have used for other purposes, (I became very worried at this point).

When I asked for a refund all they offered was that the "supervisor" would offer me 50% for the rest of the month! I very loudly told the phone agent that I wanted to CANCEL ASAP.  She agreed to refund this months charge and to cancel the "subscription".

She also told me I could still log in a see the searches made from my account.  This was yesterday.

Today I tried and log into my "account" with the credentials she told me on the phone, only to keep getting error messages that my account had been canceled or my credentials were wrong.  So, I cannot verify how my account has been used - and who was searched for.

  • I do not remember ever signing up for this service.
  • This is reinforced by the skanky unprofessional appearance of thier web site - I am a IT person and would never sign up for a service from someone with such a 'porno-looking' site.
  • They somehow got my credit card #, my email address, and a PW I have used for other sites.
  • They claimed I used the site to check on my family (WTF would I do that?!)
  • They lied to me and said I could still log in a see the searches made from my account.
