I am quite familiar with Kobold watches and own a Polar Surveyor myself. First, I can tell you the guy making the complaint about whether Seals wear the watch or not, is full of it. No one cares. Most everyone I know who has purchased a Kobold watch is buying the watch, not the hype, not the marketing, nothing of the sort.
The fact is that Kobold watchs, especially the ones which use Swiss movements, are excellent watches. The watch cases are very well made/machined and are of excellent quality. The movement for the Polar Surveyor is a highly modified Valjoux 7750 - has a GMT function, and 24 hour day/night hand as well as date and chronograph functions. The dial is Arctic Blue - stunning and exceptionally well made, as are the hands.
Now, would I pay $6,000 for it? No, but I did pay a bit over $2,500 for it barely used, and let me tell you, for the quality that went into making that watch, it was well worth it. It functions perfectly, bracelet is well made and just a beautiful, classy watch to wear.
I don't care about Michael Kobold's marketing. I buy watches, not marketing. So, when someone decides to bash a Kobold watch because of "marketing", I just roll my eyes and think "that guy can't be serious that he bought the Seals watch because of the name". The truth is, its a really well made watch, a relatively rare and unusual watch and one that I would take notice of if I happened to see someone wearing it.

I own one of the first soarway diver seals and it was never said to be named after the navy seals. The naming has to do with james gandolfini and the relationship he had with mike. kobold does claim that the seals have tested his watches (they have) and that he supports them on his site. He does know the steelers (as do I) and Starks bought the whole o-line kobolds as a gift.
My seal hasn't broken down in 10 years. It's a good watch. Overpriced, maybe.. but c'mon, we all know the margins most mechanical watches have and kobold is no different. ha smike himself been a bit immature at times? yes.. and he will admit that himself. The whole TSA thing was a stupid move on his part.. and trying to climb Mt. Everest with just a couple months of training is insane. Although he did train the right way and succeed the second time.
He has provided jobs for Pittsburgers and people in Nepal.. that's a good thing, so the way i see it there was no rip off.. maybe just someone who wants to have a cool nickname too.

I saw this idiot in a bar in Pittsburgh. He was telling me how he owned a watch company and he is buddies with guys on the Steelers. He said tried to tell me they called him Thunder Dong in college. The truth is I knew a guy he went to college with and he was the guy that pooped his pants at a tailgate and got herpes from a fat girl at the bus station. What a pig.
