I signed up for the LA Fitness in Oswego because they were opening another one real close to my house. I thought I would sign up and get going on the membership while waiting for the new one to open. So, the new one opens up and my wife and I hated it. We felt like we were on display while all of the fit people worked out around us. The pool was too small, the hot tub was too small and the hours were not convenient.
So I go through the procedures to cancel the membership, but was not told that I had to send my cancel request via CERTIFIED mail. So, as the monthly dues kept coming out of my account, I got curious and went to the club where they told me they received no cancellation request. Of course. Well, the manager said he could cancel it frm there even though he wa snot supposed to do that. While I was still standing there I received e-mails about the memberships being canceled, so I believed they were canceled.
A couple months go by and they billed me for the remaining charges, which was crazy because I paid 1st and last months dues when I signed up. So a couple mor emonths go by and they quit charging me, so that was great; then al of the sudden they started charging me multiple times a month in large amounts. They charged for the months that I hadn't paid before. After several hundreds of dollars came out of my account, I tried to contact them, where I left a voicemail for someone who did not bother to call me back until I filed a complaint with the Better Business Bureau. All of the sudden they started calling me, but by this time I was on vacation in Mexico. While on this vacation I started getting notified via e-mail by my bank that I had received several direct deposits from LA Fitness.
The things this company does are absolutely absurd. What a lousy way of doing business. I hope the company that buys them out when they start closing their doors has a better business ethic that them.
My wife and I went back to our membership at Lifetime Fitness. It is kind of expensive, but they club is awesome, open 24/7 and is full service, towels and locks included.
I hope that LA Fitness closes soon.

I joined last summer 2009. The facility is clean; however, the pool area always smells like urine. The staff here is not very courteous.
On numerous occasions I've questioned about my membership plan and several suspicious double charges on my credit card. Those questions and charges have never been cleared up and staff is good at giving you the run-around. I've been told "that's how it is" or "call our corporate office".
I regret signing up with them, I hoped this company is was better than Bally's - I was wrong.

As an ex employee of this company it was hard to explain this "policy" to members. I know how you feel. Yes it is unfair, yes it feels very wrong, and the bank lady was correct. They even try to take money away from their employees. Sad but true. It is unfortunate that the lawyers pushed you off because of money, they did not do this to me, I had demand letters written and phone calls made to LA fitness on my behalf by a top law firm who treated me like a family member. The attorney's found immediate wrong doing that most people like us would have never known. I received apology letters and checks over $3k (penalties and fines LA fit. Had to pay by law) because of this positive experience, i went to work for this company telling others about it.

I'm so glad I didn't sign with these con-artists!!! I went the an LA Fitness on a lunch break from work. The ONLY thing I wanted was a price list for different types of memberships they offered. Despite repeating this over and over to every member of the staff that spoke to me and telling them I needed to get back to work, they hassled me for over an hour, gave me a tour of the facilities, and literally would not let me leave. I tried every excuse to get out. They were still talking to me as I was walking out the door. There were three sales associates and a manager telling me I was a wimp and needed to just 'make a decision'... and sign up. I guess not listening to customer needs and insulting people is their way of attracting business. LA Fitness is a joke; I would NEVER recommend it to anyone!
