Terrie, CFB Financial is the junk debt buying side of Merchants Credit Guide Co. They are one and the same. Merchant's Credit Guide Co are debt collectors of the worst kind, and are big in the JUNK DEBT BUYING business. They buy VERY old, USUALLY uncollectable debts for far less than a penny on the dollar and then harass and intimidate someone into making even a small payment which validates the debt and makes it now legally collectable. NEVER speak to any debt collector. EVER! It will NEVER do anything positive for you, and will almost always make things worse. Upon first contact from a debt collector, send a CEASE COMMUNICATIONS request as per your rights under the FDCPA. Do this only in writing and send by certified mail, return reciept requested. Be sure to put the certified# on the letter itself, and keep a copy for your records. This procedure is very important. In your case, you have the same or similar name to the original debtor. They are fising, and everyone with the same or similar name is getting the collection letter you got. They just hope to get lucky and see who responds. This debt is so old and has been through so many agencies, they cannot document it, and they know it. They have missing or incomplete info on the actual account and debtor, so they are hoping they can get it from you. It is a fishing expedition, so DON'T BITE!
