Any time a company or individual asks for a blank check for a deposit, that's a sign something is up and none of it good. If they haven't cashed the check, put a stop payment on it, but they probably already cashed it. You might just send a demand letter stating you want your money back, that the equipment rented did not run as expected. Finally, you could take them to small claims court and sue to get your money back. Businesses should be able to tell you how many a deposit is, if they ask for a blank check, don't do business with them, they will always rip you off that way.
