Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

This was the first time I encountered this issue, I was on my way home from work and resided to pump a quick $5 dlls of gas at Murphy USA. I didn't know what was in store for me, I pumped my gas and quickly went on my way home. After a few hours had passed and my sons were bathed and fed, I logged in to check my debit card balance so I could bidder my bills. I was expecting to only see one debit for the $5 dlls I had bought earlier, but was irate when I saw a total debit of $55 dlls on my account.

I was counting on that money to buy some basic groceries for my 2 toddler boys for the week. But now I had to remove some of the money I had already set aside for my rent and electri bill, just so we can eat. This gas station should be ashamed if themselves how they go about ripping people off like that? I should request they pay my late fees for my rent and light bill. But that would just be a waste of my time. Big corporations like that have no heart. Thanks so much Murphy USA gas stations, I appreciate this unforseen problem.

Its a hold on the funds not a debit against your funds. This way ALL PARTIES INVOLVED either pay what they are supposed to or collect what they are supposed to. Normally the funds that are held are "released" with in 72 hours. Youre only mistake was that you used your card AT THE PUMP!! Had you gone INSIDE the store you could have paid only the $5 that you wanted to pump. This is NOT a ripoff. This is the costs associated with using a card AT THE PUMP!!! I myself had a similar incident happen to me a few years ago so I know as to what I speak. It was uncomfortable. It did cost me more money, but it taught me a valuable lesson that I have shared with every person I see just swiping their card at the pump.

Remember, life as in the law, ignorance is no excuse. Just because you did not know this was going to happen is no excuse. It happens and its meant to protect everyone involved. Now you know, so in the future go inside and pay for your fuel.

Colorado,
I'm very surprised this is the first time this has happened..

Most stations charge closer to $100 as a temporary hold.  This is to be sure the funds are there when the transaction clears. The hold amount is credited back after that. They don't know if you're going to buy $2 or $100 worth of gas and it protects them.  It's also a bad idea to use a debit card for gas for other reasons. If a thief has a skimmer on the pump to read your debit card info and subsequently steals from you, it's very difficult to recover your money.  It's much safer to use a credit card.  The stations instituted this police when gas prices soared and many would use their debit cards and then write checks or use their debit cards past what they had in their accounts and the stations were coming up short. They did NOT rip you off they just didn't want you to rip them off.

Nope, I don't work for them.
