I worked for this company for 9 months for $35/hour. Generally in a massage therapy clinic they will provide clients, and products used while generating a 60/40% split between the therapist and the clinic. At this location the clinic is making well over 50%! This leaves the therapists overworked and definitely underpaid! I worked 5 hours a day doing anywhere from 5-7 massages, 5 days a week. This owner was collecting over $5000-$6000 a month from my wages alone. There are over 8 different therapists working there making her well over $30,000 a month.

When I asked for a raise she told me all my money was going back into the clinic! This owner is overworking her employees, she requires a months notice for one day off, and a doctor's note if you are sick for any reason. She is rude and immature, and treats her staff like slaves. Then when one stands up for themselves, she starts screaming at you like a child. This is a warning to all massage therapists...do not work at this clinic!!!!

She goes through 10-15 therapists a year due to her poor management skills! DO NOT WORK FOR HER! She lies about pay during the interview and she lies about clients. She steals from her other therapists clients so you appear busy your first month, then you are down to one...maybe two massages a day! Clients! Do not support this clinic! You find an awesome therapist that will be gone within months. Don't waste your time and money at this clinic! The therapist work too hard to get such poor pay!

#2Consumer Comment

I came across this "report" critical of Muscle Matters and its owner, and as an extreamly satisfied client with a personal relationship with a past employee and who has know the owner/employer since the opening of the store, I felt obligated to respond to these damning comments.

First I would like to point out the math in this argument is terrible. If the worker got paid $35/hour and the company charges $80/hour for a massage, then the worker is getting 43.8% of the revenues. Exceeding the 60/40 split they claim is reasonable. I can only assume that this split is company/employee as I have never seen a successful business operate with 60% of the revenues going to the employee, unless they are including fringe benefits like medical, paid holidays, sick pay, etc. in the calculation and all overheads such as rent, utilities, and capital costs. Even if that is the case I am sure any business in Edmonton would have at least a $13/hour + base wage overhead cost in operating their business; which would be in keeping with the 60% allotment otherwise.

Secondly, I know a former massage therapist who worked at Muscle Matters and discussed in detail what she loved and hated about working there. The only negative thing she had to say was that she didn't like the hours and the number of massages she was doing and it did not fit into having a family. Fair enough, but these are personal reasons and are not reflective of how the boss treated her. The only issue beyond that was she technically could not start her own massage business for 6 months or so after quitting. She did however.... shhh, lets keep that between us.... so she could take a couple clients who were personal friends too (ie: ME!)

Lastly, the owner of Muscle Matters is very picky about who she employs and as a long term client who still goes there (more so since my friend had a kid) I am so happy she does. She employes quality therapists who tend to your needs and concerns. They are always professional and ensure you get your time paid for. I would recommend them to family and friends, and I actually do. I have never had anyone who I have referred ever say a bad thing about their experiences, and each and every one of them has continued to go there. Even my father-in-law who thought we were nuts when we suggested he go for his bad back, because "massages are for women", loved it so much he goes every two weeks.

#3UPDATE EX-employee responds

I worked there as well, but I didn't have nearly the tenacity as you did! I stuck it out for about 2 months before I left.
I couldn't believe how many lies or exaggerations I was told during the interview, such as the hotel quality linens (which are thread bare, but cover the stained & matted table warmers), your table will always be changed for you (but only if the shift manager can tear herself away from her facebook, twitter, movie, or solitaire game), a fair wage ($35 and after a year you get a *GASP* $1 raise), she basically makes you think that you are going to be working at a clinic that would be any therapists dream when in reality it's pretty close to a nightmare.
I felt so sorry for the therapists working there, there is no team atmosphere what so ever, the place is just depressing! So if you feel the need to be unappreciated, taken advantage of, and beaten down by all means take a job there.
There are alot of great clinics out there that will value you & your skills, but this place isn't one of them....
