After going through the medical records of a couple of dogs I inherited from an elderly client of Newton Vet Hospital, I found she had been taken advantage of.

The records repetively repeat " Owner unable to drive", "Owner does not have transportation" "Owner unable to come in" "Owner cannot make follow up appointment" "Difficulty understanding" "Trouble understanding"

Yet, Newton Vet charged the owner multiple times for pre-paid fecal & urine tests.

This is taking advantage of the elderly. NO veterinary professional can expect an elderly woman to collect these samples at her home, on her own, from obese male DASCHUNDS no less (they drag on the ground!) and expect her to bring it back in their claimed time period when she can barely get into the facilty for a re-check or sick visit.

There were call backs about blood results but no reminder to drop off the samples? That would have been courtious.

I am also very sure, she would have never approved of such a thing, as needing to come back- she declined everything offered to her if it was not what she went into the facilty wanting. Also documented.

Why weren't the samples collected in-house? It was very well documented the animals did not come in very often.

There are no fecal analysis results in the medical records or any entries into the medical records of the sample being submitted for testing. Again, this sample could have been taken whilst Christopher and Fritzi were in the office for their visit. The same goes for the urine sample charge and no proof of testing or results, all part of a comprehensive patient medical record.

I feel compelled to respond to this writers extremely inaccurate and inappropriate complaint that Newton Veterinary Hospital takes advantage of the elderly.  I am the Practice Manager of Newton Veterinary Hospital and I have worked here for 13 years.

On MULTIPLE occasions I PERSONALLY picked-up Mrs. Cook for her veterinary appointments and returned her safely to her home.  I PERSONALLY delivered prescriptions to her home so that she would not need to find transportation.  Mrs. Cook was well known by all of our staff and was always treated with dignity and respect.

Yes, our medical records clearly stated that "owner unable to drive"; or, "owner has difficulty understanding" so that both doctors and staff would know to speak slowly and clearly to Mrs. Cook.  To state that we took advantage of her by sending her home with unnecessary pre-paid fecals is simply wrong.  Fecal samples are checked annually; more frequently if parasites were seen.  Mrs. Cook was sent home with the exact same number of pre-paid fecals as most of our clients.  We do not alter our standard of care for dogs owned by the elderly; we simply accommodate them.  Once again, on more than one occasion, I, or one of our staff members, picked up the fecal sample directly from Mrs. Cook and then delivered the necessary medications.

I considered Mrs. Cook to be a friend, not just a client. I was saddened to learn of her recent passing.  Mrs. Cook was a wonderful pet owner to Fritzi and Christopher and they will be missed too.  I am sorry that her neighbor has chosen to portray our relationship as one of neglect and distrust.  I am at peace knowing that Mrs. Cook would see things otherwise, as well, and appreciate the care and attention paid to her and her dogs over the years.

Sincerely,

Karen L.
