You can sue them under the provisions of the FCRA and FDCPA, the two acts of congress that protects consumers from these bottom feeders, getting $1000 for each violation, including the negative marks on your credit report. You can get Palisaides, and you can get the credit bureaus if they refuse to investigate disputes in the required timeframe. Bud Hibbs has a website that can help you out with these idiots. its budhibbs.com.

First of all, NEVER do any of this over the phone! Phone calls DO NOT protect your rights, and they never existed if this ever goes to court. All communications MUST be sent by cerified mail, return reciept requested, and put a copy of the certified# on the letter itself. Keep a copy of any letter sent for your records. Palisades is a junk debt buyer, and most likely they could not document or prove this debt, so they could not win against you in court and they know it. Debts of this age are purchased in bulk for less than 1 penny on the dollar. You just need to send this collector a "debt validation" request, where you specifically state that you dispute it in it's entirety because your AT&T account was paid in full and closed. Tell them that you need to see an account history as well as a collections history since the account has been closed. If you will do this, chances are very good that you will never hear from them again. Do NOT give these jerks any of your personal information such as SS#, DOB, employment info, etc.. They do not have any rights to this info. Send a dispute to each major credit bureau stating the acct was paid in full at the time it was closed, and you do not owe them anything. Tell them you want an account history. And, there is a statute of limitations for action on debt collections. I do not have yours handy at this time, but it should be expired. Good luck, and STAY OFF THE PHONE!!
