PTI Professional Transportation Inc. Over the road drivers sometimes get paid less than minimun wage Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
there are times ( a lot of times for a new driver) when a over the road driver gets paid less than minimum wage for their time spent driving on their route. The pay is a minimum of 2 hours per route. a lot of times you have to wait for the railroad employees to get in your vehicle for which you are compensated, but the 2 hour minimum route may actually take more than 2 hours but since the miles traveled are so minimal you are only compensated 2 hours wages. for example a new inexperienced hire only gets minimum wage $7.25/hour and .15 cents/mile. a trip that is only 50 miles pays $7.50 (.15 x 50 = 7.50) so your pay would be $14.50 and many times takes 2.5 -3 hours of your time. at 3 hours time the pay is $4.83/hour. You are expected to be on call when on the schedule, you are not compensated for being on call, but you must be available when called by dispatch. for no fault of your own if there is a detour on your route and you have to drive more miles than the company expects, you are only paid for the expected mileage.
