Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?

On February 6, 2014, I leased a Class A motorhome vehicle from Redrock RV.  This motorhome was in such a poor condition that it should have never been put on the highway.  We planned a trip from Iowa to Mesa, Arizona and from the moment we took possession of the motorhome there were problems.  For the 3 days prior to our trip the motorhome was parked in my driveway.  During this time the furnace began to malfunction.  I contacted Mr. Berning regarding this problem prior to departure.  Instead of him sending a repair person or offering to assist with the problem he replied that cold weather would cause these types of problems.  We continued to experience severe lack of heat problems throughout the trip...and this was especially hard on my 92 year old mother who accompanied me and my brother. Mr. Berning would offer nothing other than telling us to have the furnace fixed and he would reimburse us whatever he thought was fair.  What?  This is not our motorhome...this is his responsibility.

The next big problem to occur was a blow out  of the rear dual tire near Hollister New Mexico.  Redrock RV was to provide roadside service but when we called that number they said the owner had to be contacted to authorize roadside service and he could not be reached. We finally reached Scott Bernum by text and he stated for us to call a local repair company and for us to purchase a new tire and he would reimburse us ...this was $290 out of pocket. (what? this is his RV having the problems due to his poor maintenance).

When we finally made it to Arizona, two days later than anticipated due to furnace  probems and tire blowouts, I stepped out of the motorhome and could not get back in.  The door latch broke locking my 92 year old mother inside.  She was hysterical and suffers from clautrophobia.  My brother had to remove and replace the entire door lock mechanism,  not to mention driving around Phoenix to find one that would fit the motorhome.  This at a cost of $105.00....again, whose RV is this?  We payed almost $2500 in rental fees for the two weeks and expected the vehicle to be in a maintained condition.

In addition there were constant minor problems:  (1) The dining table bench sides fell apart when trying to convert it to a bed. (2) te door steps would not completely retract under the RV aking it hazardous when passing other vehicles (3) the windshield wipers would not dispense fluid; (4) the drivers window was sealed shut and we could not open when going through toll booth areas; The latches for the motorhome outside compartments were all broken and the underneath storage compartments were useless because the bottoms were falling out.

We supplied Mr. Berning with receipts for repairs and have requested reimbursement but to date he has not done anything to correct this siutation.   My brother and I worked to return the vehicle in better condition than when we received it, thoroughly cleaning it, removing all dump waste and re-winteriing it with anti-freeze.  All this at our own labor and expense.

This letter is in response to Phyllis Anderson complaint. First, in reference to the furnace not working, I did try to help her diagnose the problem. It was intermitant for her but was working fine when the RV left. Upon inspection on return of the RV, it was found out that the Andersons filled the LP tank and the LP valve was not turned back on all of the way. What this did was cause intermitant heat and due to inconsistent propane to the furnace, the furnace was filled with soot causing sever loss of life to the furnace. Van Haaften Heating and Cooling in Pella, looked at it and concluded the above.

Secondly, they did have a tire blow out. I did find them a road service to get them a new tire and promised to compensate them for the tire. This incident from what I seen took about 3-4 hours off their trip.

Thirdly, they succeded in breaking a door handle. I cannot say that it was due to abuse but I can say that RV door handles do get replaced from time to time. They were able to get a new one installed and I do not disagree with refunding them the cost of the door handle.

I agreed to let them pick up the RV early which they did. I did not charge for that but I did have to charge them insurance all days it was in their possession. $18/day and I agreed to even pay half for them.

I also stated that they could return the RV late free of charge if it helped them with unpack time and clean up time. This was not meant to mean that it was OK to be across the country with the RV and use that as your free unpack / clean up time.  I am not responsible for weather causing them delays. If you rented a car and could not get back until a couple days late due to weather, you would expect to have to pay.

3 days downtime for a door handle and tire are excessive. These are normal wear and tear items and I cannot refund days based off of that. Her 2 extra days plus insurance more than offsets the $400.00 in repairs and still as a gesture I process a refund of $200.00.
