My husband and I are Safeway Insurance policy holders. We went with Safeway because they were the least expensive (never again). My husband was in an accident on 11/22/04 that only involved our vehicle hydroplaning into a water-filled ditch. The van instantly filled with water leaving my husband barely able to get out. I reported the incident that same day, about an hour after the accident, maybe sooner. This was a Tuesday.

On Wednesday morning I called the insurance company to see if my van had been picked up from the wrecker station. Of course it was not but I was told, "It will be picked up this afternoon". Around 3 pm that day I called the wrecker service to see if my van had been picked up, it had not. When I asked if they new why they told me that my insurance company said they would be picking it up Monday. Infuriated, I called Safeway Insurance just to find out everyone was off until Monday due to Thanksgiving. Meanwhile, I have borrowed my fathers 2 seater pick-up and I have a family of six.

Monday rolls around, I call Safeway to find out if my van has been picked up yet. I find out that my van has not been picked up and will not be picked up until Tuesday morning or maybe even Wednesday morning.

Now I am even madder. So I tell the woman I have been put off for a week already, if my children get sick, how am I suppose to transport them? Two of my children are still toddlers. She informs me it is because of the holiday, which in turn makes me even madder.

So, my van gets picked up on Tuesday, but it isn't taken to Birmingham, which is only an hour away. It is taken to Decatur, which is about 3+ hours away. I call Safeway Tuesday afternoon to see if has been appraised yet, it hasn't and won't be until Wednesday because that is when the appraiser can do it. So I call Safeway Wednesday to see if it is appraised yet, it is but now they are waiting for some CC person to call to tell them how much they can pay. So I call Thursday and they finally tell me that the van has been totaled, but they are still waiting for the CC person to call. So I call Friday and Safeway still has nothing from the CC as to how much money they can offer to pay towards my vehicle. I proceeded to tell Safeway that my policy states that I have property damage liability for $10,000 each accident and she tells me that it covers UP to $10,000 but that we won't get that much.

I told her my policy does not state up to...it states that I am covered for $10,000. Needless to say, she hung up on me and when I called back to talk to someone higher up they refused to put me through, when I asked for a corporate number they refused to give it to me.

Please inform anyone you know not to go through rinky dink cheap insurance companies because you get what you pay for. Especially any small insurance company that uses Safeway Insurance or Trigon, Inc..

Wow. Where to begin. First of all, your property damage liability coverage does not cover damages to your vehicle. It's a liability coverage which means it will cover someone elses property if you damage it with your vehicle. That limit does not apply to your vehicle at all. If you have full coverage on your vehicle, you should have a deductible. Any damages paid to you will be less this deductible. They are not going to pay for you to get a new car(unless you've purchased that coverage), they are going to pay to repair your vehicle to the condition it was in previously. Let's say the cost to repair the vehicle is $5000 & you have a $500 deductible, they will be $4500. Check and see if you have rental reimbursement coverage or transportation expense coverage. If you do, they should pay for you to get a rental car. As far as the amount of time it's taken...everyone deserves a holiday. Most insurance companies are closed Thanksgiving Day & the day after.
