This message is to bring to your attention the unethical and abhorrent sales procedures being used by one of their dealers.

I spent a Saturday at this dealership, and left with a signed sales agreement for a 2003 Mazda6. The price listed on the windshield was $16,722 after rebates. I was then told this price included a Mazda loyalty rebate, I had sold my last Mazda previously, so the agreed upon price was $17,922. Great, I bought the car and offered to put down a $6700 deposit. Oddly enough, they said this was not necessary, that my wife could get the car on Monday.

I left the dealership after closing time, and they are not open on Sunday, otherwise I would have gotten the car the next day. My wife went down to the dealership on Monday, as soon as it was open to get the car.

She called me at my workplace and was very upset. The sales manager had just informed her the car was not there, but sold to another party. Here is where the sleaze enters the scene. They offered to sell us another vehicle, but for $1900 more, the old bait and switch. They claimed the car had been sold to someone else, after hours. The sales manager said this happens all the time and could not understand why I was angry.

I asked him if I was required to sleep in the car to prevent him selling it from under me, and he replied he will sell any car to anyone who offers more money, regardless if a deal is in place or not. This was very surprising to hear and absolutely disgusted me. If they had already sold this car to another party, why not tell us instead of having my wife go all the way there? The situation was insulting to our intelligence.

After we refused the blatant attempt to extort more money from us, the sales manager had the gall to call me later in the day to tell me the car was never sold to anyone else, and was still available! This was increasingly insulting and I asked for an explanation. He stammered a few sentences of nonsense, every time he was caught in a lie, he created more.

This entire experience has completely turned me off from ever purchasing a Mazda, as it is your responsibility to ensure dealer integrity and this dealership is absolutely bankrupt of ethics and integrity. The aloof approach to lying and cheating was very upsetting and we are currently considering further actions.

I have dealt with University on many transactions. I bought vehicles and had service there. Never, never have they done anything that was not above board and customer oriented. There is a saying, " to believe all men to tell the truth is to be a fool, but believe all men to be liars is something worst." I am sure it was a mistake, the vehicle actually was sold later. It has happened to me just this Christmas on an XBOX360. I was told they would hold it for me, when I got there another employee had sold it. Plus I never heard of a dealer that turned down a deposit sounds fishy to me. Rex

the contest at university mazda seemed to be a bogas contest. the votes werent tallied right. I think it was a scam. Did they give a car away or not. i think it was a set up and the radio station Wild 106.3 was in on it. can you find out about it. i think there should be a recount or a new contest or something they all should be made to do right. i am a concerned parent./

Roger, Give the NM Atty General's office a call and tell them what happened to you. Patricia Madrid, AG for the state of New Mexico, hates car dealers and their rotten practices. My wife and I went through a similar experience with a dealership in Los Lunas. The dealership will blow you off until they get the letter/phone call from the AG telling them that they are being investigated. Don't be afraid to play hardball with these crooks either. The dealership that blew me off ignored me until they recieved the letter from my atty and from the AG. Then they couldnt have been more accomodating. When you call the AG make aure you ask for Casey Courtney. She is an excellent comsumer affairs protection specialist. If you really want to rattle their cage have your lawyer send them a letter. The last bit of advice I will give you is to call Larry Barker at KOAT channel 7 news. Larry is the investigative reporter for Channel 7. Nothing like a little bad PR to get business owners nervous. Good Luck.
