Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
It is hard for me to get out to shop, but today i went to walmart to buy food for my house. I have several fractured disks in my back,my husband took me and after a long slow shopping trip when we went to check out I had to ask for more chashiers the lines were horriably long. we finally got a lane to check out, The chashier was in such a hurry she couldnt see the bold yellow sticker on the ground meat i bought and charged us full price. i looked over my bill and found her mistake, i showed it to her and she shrugged her shoulders and pointed to customer service. so another delay which was making my shopping trip even longer. I stood inline for customer service, the lady behind the counter saw the mistake and i asked for the products free becuase i was charged wrong. she looked surprised and asked another lady and her responces was i have worked here three years and we have never done that! i was given the diference in the price and that was that. I felt wronged by this, and wonder how many people get ripped off everyday like this

and by the "law", I mean me.

First off, ignore Mr. Rik. He's just a little internet troll that likes to stir the pot and upset people. I'm envisioning that he's a pimple-faced 32 year old nerd that still lives at home in his mother's basement pleasuring himself to David Hasselhoff pictures.

Now, on to the issue at hand. Ok, so Walmart made a boo boo; big deal. Everyone makes mistakes. It's totally unreasonable to think that the store should give you the item for free. Besides, if giving away the item for free was their policy when something was incorrectly rung up, the store would respond by jacking up prices to make up for it. Is that really what you want? (one free item now vs. higher places for everyone later) Do you think that your time is that valuable that you'd have no problem with that? Get over yourself.

It's amazing what people try to do to get free stuff.

Pricing Policy

#12UPDATE Employee

Sat, June 11, 2011

Wal-Mart's current policy is that if an item on the shelf is listed for less than it rings up, you get however many of the items you are purchasing at the listed price, plus 3 dollars off one of each unique item that was wrong.  If that item is less than 3 dollars, you get it for free.  This counts whether it is priced wrong on a shelf, has a price sticker directly on it, or has a clearance sticker on it.

What they should have done at the Customer Service desk is give you 3 dollars off whatever price was listed for the meat you purchased.

It's really not any more your fault than the cashier's that the mistake wasn't caught during the transaction, but that doesn't mean you can blame them after the fact because she couldn't fix.

[If this situation ever happens to you, ask to speak to a manager concerning Wal-Mart's pricing policies]

I would like to suggest to the Walmart customer who suffered the inconvenience of waiting  in a customer service line to retrieve her money.  Always ask for a manager and explain to him or her the inconvenience of waiting in line.  I live in Las vegas and have had the same  experience and have had Walmart gift cards offered for my inconvenience.  It is a waste of time to argue with a clerk.

Looking past the over-the-top suggestions, Mr Rik is dead on about the customer's issue here. Just giving back the difference after making the customer wait on a second line due to their error, combined with the "who cares" attitude of the cashier, who deserves thus to be called CHASHIER, entitles the customer, in my opinion, to something to compensate for her time and aggravation.

I used to deliver snack foods to grocery stores and other companies in California.  I've also managed a convenience store and worked in retail, including Wal-Mart. First of all, the state keeps an eye on retailers to make sure that they are charging prices correctly...enough complaints, they will send secret shoppers in to find out if something is going on. I was yelled at by a store manager when I was subbing a snack food route, for believe it or not, drivers (who often place the product on store shelves) can cause the store to get in trouble if those little shelf tags don't match up to the product...shoppers see the price, so misplaced products can cause lots of aggravation. Wal-Mart did have a policy (at least around here) of giving $3.00 off a product that was rung up incorrectly (less than $3.00, it was free). Stickers were placed on the area near the cash register. It's a catch-22 on the other hand, because there ARE "shoppers" who change stickers or play other games. Bottom line though, almost always, management has some discretion in solving customer service problems. You might not get the meat for FREE, but they should take into consideration the facts...one store I shop at places discount stickers directly over UPC codes so they won't be mis-rung. Those are tear-away destructive, so customers can't move them to another package. Seems the customer service people weren't looking very hard at keeping a customer...you could write or call whatever customer service Wal-Mart has: maybe using us a bit more of your time will get a better response. Or, do what I've done. Shop sales and learn to coupon aggressively; I very seldom go into Wal-Mart anymore, just because the aggravations don't make it worth the "savings".

No one's going to listen to you, you don't know squat.  You're probably one of those types that are "oh boo h*o, I deserve a free handout no matter what!"  Also, to the OP, please go back to school, learn how to spell, and just because it was Walmart's policy a long time ago to get things free, doesn't mean it is now and neither should the old policy apply to you.

I am an 11 year employee with WM and the last 5 yrs as a cashier. At one time many years ago, WM would give the product to the customer for free or a reduced price if the price charged was wrong but that was MANY YEARS AGO!

NO WHERE in any WM store that I go into do I ever see any type of sign that says if the product purchased is rung up at the wrong price, the customer will get it FREE! There is NOTHING FREE at Wal Mart or any other store that I use.

There IS NO RIPOFF if there is nothing that states under what conditions a product might be FREE for the customer.

REMEMBER, for every loss of $ for the store due to non-existant FREE products or products that are stolen, the losses are ALWAYS PASSED ON TO ALL THE CUSTOMERS in the form of higher prices

To put it bluntly:

Your demand for an incorrectly-scanned product to be given to you at no charge is incredibly unreasonable. Price errors happen all the time anywhere you go whether it is to you or someone else, so that's an automatic no-go. The store did the right thing by ringing the item up at the correctly price, and giving you the difference back.

I'll also scrutinize a couple of other items in the story:

The first thing that you made known was that you were handicapped; okay, understandable, but it doesn't bear any relevance to the suppose injustice at hand which, by what you're claiming, is the ringing up of a wrong price, and maybe an inconvenience of your time which, yeah I suppose if you're handicapped it can be a strain on you, but, while I have respect for the handicapped, I think some areas of the story are exaggerated as to influence a motion of sympathy from the reader.

Anyways, on to the next time:

"The 'chashier' was in such a hurry she couldn't see the bold yellow sticker on the ground meat"

Did you catch this AS she was ringing up your items? Why did you wait until AFTER the transaction to mention anything about it whereas she could've voided the item off the ticket and rerung it up at the correct price. Because, from what I'm reading, if I'm understanding correctly, you waited until AFTER the purchase, the cashier no longer had the capabilities of exchanging your items, and now required the assistance of customer service.

I don't believe that she simply shrugged her shoulders and pointed, but that she tried to explain and you simply wouldn't listen. Why do I think this?

"when we went to check out I had to ask for more chashiers the lines were horriably long."

Very authoritive, very demanding, and very unlikely of any patience being demonstrated or understanding for that matter in terms of mistakes as demonstrated by your complaint which, really, bears no evidence of a 'rip off' at all.

If you did not catch the mistake until after the transaction, then you were no better than the chashier in that you could've prevented the entire thing by POLITELY informing the cashier (Before finishing out the purchase) that she rung up the meat wrong. I am sure a void+re-ring is not beyond their register's capabilities. As I said before, because you waited until after the fact, you now had to deal with customer service, so you inconvenienced yourself in that regards.

Should the cashier have been paying more attention? Yes, but she'd be less inclined to be rushed through a transaction if, a, people were more understanding on matters of being short-staffed, and b, if she didn't have someone standing at her register who was probably crabby through the entire transaction. I've made plenty of errors myself just wanting to get someone out the door, although I work at a different store lol

Food for thought:

Be more reasonable.

They took care of your problem, no rip-off here.

Why does Walmart, Meat, and a bold yellow(discount?) sticker sound like a very bad combination.

Anyways....I have never seen or heard of a single scanner discrepency policy give you the item free under all conditions.  Some will do something like give it to you at the shelf price and then give you an extra $3, and if the item is under $3 you get the item for free.  But nice try in getting a $500 TV for free because it was scanned for $10 more.

But in your case it probably would not have applied anyways.  Because these "policies" generally do not apply to packages with a price sticker on the item.  They only apply between the shelf price and price it scans at the register of non-individually priced items.  So if the cashier missed the price sticker on the package..it wouldn't be a "scanner" error so it would not apply.

mr. rik,

You recommended the customer shoplift the merchandise. A couple of days ago you recommended (Rip Off Report 710130) the consumer put water in the gas tank of a rental car to offset the fuel level.

I am quite confident that recommendations of criminal acts such as shoplifting and property damage are not the intent of this web site.

And, it's not a typo as it is in more than one place.

Time is money.  When people waste my time I want money.  Or a piece of their a*s.  The stupid cashier couldnt even figure out how to adjust the price? wtf. I guess you shouldnt be shopping at walmart anyway.  I knew a guy would threaten to take his kids to walmart if they didnt behave.

Next time just put the ground meat under your dress.  I doubt it has the security feature and even if it does I doubt they will bother looking.

Do you really think that if someone makes a mistake ringing something up that you should get it free?  Would that apply to a computer or television too?  How about at a Lexus dealer that charged the wrong price?

You are correct to watch the prices as they are entered to make sure they don't make a mistake.  Everyone should do that as a matter of course.

They corrected their mistake and gave you the difference.  No ripoff.
