24 Hour Fitness Unable to cancel membership of deceased. San Francisco California
My husband died three years ago, and I went to cancel his membership which was auto-debited from our joint account. I was informed that a cancellation takes effect after two more billing cycles and can ONLY be made by the member, which I pointed out would be difficult since it would be hard for him to communicate from inside his urn.
So, I closed our joint checking account and debit card, and opened a new one in my own name. 24 Hour Fitness was somehow able to force the two months' deductions from MY NEW ACCOUNT, which had nothing to do with my late husband. They said their contract was binding, and that it was the responsibility of the member (or his beneficiaries, in my case) to fulfill the contract.
Because my SSN had been on the same checking account as his they were able to tap into my new account, even though I had never been a member or given them my own SSN.
