Aetna sent me a questionare after I was seen at the emergency room for a virus that was going around the city. I caught it so I went in with a fever to the E.R to get some antibiotics. Later Aetna tried to deny my claim on the grounds that four months earlier when I had signed up I forgot to fill out the question asking for the termination date of my last insurance. If this was a problem they should have let me know when I submitted the paperwork four months ago, not wait until I visit the hospital and try to deny payment. I called them immediately to let them know the date my last insurance terminated and now after several calls no one can tell me the status and they just keep saying they will call me back...hmmmm, it's ridiculous that I have to deal with this over a simple visit to the hospital!!

Pre-existing condition information

It sounds like you're talking about a pre-existing condition information questionaire. This is actually something that is sent out to you and sometimes your primary care provider to make sure that you were not seen for a condition or if you had no break in coverage before becoming effective with an insurance company. Sometimes this is triggered by the receipt of a medical claim, probably the first one you submit to the insurance company. One thing to keep in mind is that this is not something insurance companies write into the plans, or actually enjoy doing, it is something that YOUR employer chose to have included in YOUR plan sp that they don't have to pay for an illness you may have before you started with them. If you do not agree with this practice you should really contact your HR Department and I'm sure they'll confirm this.
