Here it is 2010 and some on-line retailers still have problems with their websites and their customer service. Barnes and Noble.com website prompted me for the two gift cards I had, both $25 for a total of $50. They were brand new cards just issued and had never been used before. So I carefully found enough stuff to get close to a $50 total and then input the cards, which worked! But the website thought one of the cards only had $14 on it. So I closed out of everything, deleted the order, and canceled the use of each gift card. And I started over. I entered the card that the site thought there was only $14 on, and it showed $25 total credit had been entered. Then I entered the 2nd card, and now it showed $50 credit. Then I re-added the books I wanted and IT DID IT AGAIN, it freaked out and thought one card was now worth $14. After playing with it for a long time I found one book I was entering, when I added that, then it would mess up the credit total which makes no sense at all.
So after fooling around for about 45 minutes, I went ahead and just ordered the books and paid the difference. I called Customer Service. This is what my main problem is, and that is I read my order number to the girl and she said, "I have no record of that order". I said, "I just placed the order and I am looking at the order number on the screen". We read the numbers back and forth to each other not once, not twice, not three times, but four times. And no I don't speak funny. Finally she said, "Did you just place that order?" And I said, "Yes, about 20 minutes ago before speaking to you". And she said, "Oh that's why, it takes it a while to show up in our system!"
Oh my goodness. What a great system they have. So I went and did something else for a while to clear my head from the incredible ineptitude which is Barnes and Noble. After over two hours I called back and gave my order number again, carefully, reading it back to the girl. They still did not have it.
So I called my credit card company, which would show the charge for the difference that I shouldn't have had to pay except for the system couldn't seem to understand I had two $25 gift cards. They had my charge already, it had already gone through and been posted.
So I called Barnes and Noble back again and explained this to them. Using my name, my credit card number, and my order number they STILL could not locate my order.
I'd like to add that while there I looked at a lot of books, CD's, Movies and computer games. The only reason I went there was because of the two gift cards I'd been given. Every single thing I looked at was available for less at Amazon.com. For instance Seinfeld-the Complete Series as of the date of this posting is $225.89 at Barnes and Noble, 158.49 at Amazon.com new, same format, same everything. Barnes and Noble, why is it still in business? What a nightmare and a waste of time! I assume my order will go through and I'll get the books, at least I hope so.
