I've been a trainer for Body of Change/LA Fitness for almost 2 years partime in the evening, I train the vast of my clients elsewhere in the morning and afternoon. I am National Academy of Sports Medicine certified (NASM is recognized among the elite as the industry standard), and CPR certified with over 13 years of Personal Training experience and 18 years of fitness experience.
I started working for BOC because I had just moved back to Miami from Austin and I needed a job. I soon developed my own clientele in the morning at a great training studio in pinecrest, but I kept my job at BOC part-time at night because I was promised an eventual raise and possible health benefits. Months went by so I asked for a raise (what trainer can live on $6 a session??) I just got the run-around and more empty promises. this went on for a very long time.
Throughout my time at BOC, I've seen them hire ex-cons with no training experience and no certification, no CPR (actually NO ONE at LA Fitness is CPR certified). I've seen them hire high school kids, punk thugs. people that flat out have no idea how to properly train a client. Although a small minority of trainers are excellent, and highly qualified, their employment time is as tiny as BOC's business ethics.
For the 2 years I've been at LA Fitness I have witnessed BOC sales staff(assisitant managers) blatantly lie to people, and give them fraudulent fitness and nutritional advice. BOC sales staff are NOT Trainers. They are not certified. They are hired purely on their selling ability. (In essence, their ability to B.S. people)
BOC sales staff fill the clients minds with B.S. ,then sometimes tell the trainer to go along with the B.S. until the clients 3 day contract cancellation grace period is up, that way the sales rep can still get their commission, while totally screwing over the client. Many times I have exposed the truth to clients before the 3 days were up, giving them plenty of time to back out. I was chastised for doing it.
Many times the sales staff will sell the client with the idea that they can train with a friend, forcing the trainer to now train 2 clients for the payment of one, 2 clients for $6!!!!
Remember, clients at BOC pay $35 to $50 for a 1/2 hour session, and $50 to $80 for an hour session.
The trainer is only getting paid $6 for a 1/2 hour session and $12 for an hour. The client is paying top dollar for training, while being trained by an under-paid, inexperienced trainer, who does not take his or her job seriously. Or the trainer is extremely experienced and qualified, but because of the rediculously low pay, quits within a couple of months, leaving the client without a trainer for anywhere from a week to a couple of months (Meanwhile the client is getting charged) The sessions do build up, but if they are not used within 6 months, BOC deletes them, screwing the client out of hundreds, sometimes thousands of dollars. I have seen it happen.(But hey, why would they care? they have all your money at that point) Scumbags!!!
As you can see this works out great for BOC, but the client and trainer are completely shafted. It is a classic example of corporate exploitation and greed.
I recently had the displeasure of talking to the vice president of BOC, and he flat out admitted to me that I will never get a raise, BOC will never raise their standards for trainers, will never buy training tools for the trainers like med. balls, stability balls, kettlebells etc.. to improve the quality of training for clients ( He said it isnt a priority). I told him of my concerns with the company, and he just did not care. He did however offer to order me some more BOC shirts, wheeeee!
It is an absolute fact that LA Fitness/Body of Change's only concern is making loads of money, people mean nothing to them. The amount of money they are making from exploiting trainers is obscene.
Once you sign the contract, you are just a number. BOC couldn't care less about the low quality personal training standards, the BOC staff aren't even regulated.
What is trully pathetic is, the trainers are the people who are providing the fitness service to the clients. They are providing what the client thinks is what BOC is all about. But the reality is that trainers are looked at by BOC as insignificant, but the sales staff are pampered with large commission sums, and big sales bonus's, and they have nothing to do with fitness! They are just a bunch of phony idiots!
When BOC or LA Fitness says that these are isolated incidents , and they are not common practice, they are lying! Their entire system is set up for fraud, and greed.
If you are not a BOC client, do NOT even think about getting involved with them.
If you are already a BOC client, DO NOT re-new your contract, you can find a much more qualified trainer at a smaller fitness gym or studio, with better equipment, and more training tools.
I am still working for BOC because I have become good friends with some of my clients there, and I dont want to see them get screwed over by BOC, but after the holidays, I am leaving to train at Pinecrest full time, where the clients don't get ripped off (Because the clients deal directly with me and not some scumbag used car salesman looking for a big commission), no contracts, and there are far more training tools further ensuring the client is getting quality results. Plus clients have the oppurtunity to verify certifications and train with their trainer before they spend a dime.
I wrote this email because my conscience no longer allows me to be silent about the horrible practices of LA Fitness/Body of Change against its clients and the minority of fantastic qualified trainers that are being exploited. LA Fitness/BOC needs to be taken down. They are out of control.
