Ive always thoughtit would be an awesome experience to host a foreign exchange student so when the opportunity with CETUSA presented itself, of course I was excited ! But that excitement has been short-lived.
The so called "community coordinator" for this area is inexperienced, does not respond to issues/questions/problems in a timely manner....sometimes ignoring phone calls all together. If you're dealing with teenagers from countries all over the world you would think that they would find better suited individualsto represent them. SMH
The CC's so called boss is even WORSE. She is so flakely its pathetic!!!!! She says she's been doing this for sooo many years but I can't see how. She does NOT train community coordinators very well at all. She tells families how they MUST run their households, is not professional at all, when she issues arise between host parent/student, she does not do an effective job of resolving the problem to the point where both sides are made to feel comfortable. Should I keep going ?
When a host family completes the application, they clearly state their expectations and rules for a reason. But when an issue arises....such as a student is made because "luxuries" are taken away for refusing or failing to adhere to house rules, complains that the host family doesnt run to the store EVERY day, the student can't hang with friends because they didnt make prior arrangements with host family.... the HOST FAMILY is the one who is told to "lighten up".
If I had REALLY done my research on this organization, there would have been so many red flags pop up and I would have saved EVERYONE the heartache and headaches. For everything that they expect us to do, we SHOULD be compensated in some way.
Beware of this company, please do your research, and DONT GO THRU CETUSA if you plan on hosting a foreign exchange student.

I am a new Community Coordinator with CETUSA. I became a coordinator after hosting a student with CETUSA. I have raised four teenagers and conflict with teenagers is an ongoing process. With all due respect, it sounds to me like your expectations are a little high regarding how much interaction should take place between coordinators and host families/host children. Maybe you don't have experience raising teenagers which is ok, but conflict resolution should fall greatly on the host family and communication should be present in the host household. If there is this much conflict I believe that the child should be relocated or you should consider this not being your "cup of tea". CETUSA exceeds the requirements put out by the Department of State and does heavily screen their students. I think possibly there is just some breakdown regarding expectations in your situation.

"Cetusa may go beyond the rules of the regulated laws however it is for a reason." Really?! If you check your knowledge better you don´t need to write bulls* here!! For example: nonprofitquarterly.org/2012/02/14/state-department-slaps-nonprofit-for-j-1-visa-program-violations/

I am a pediatric nurse for 20+ yrs. I have never thought about having a "foreign exchange student" until my daughter that is 17 yrs old became great friends with one in her 11th grade year. After much consideration of the friendship that my child experienced with this student ( and still does) I thought what a great experience would this be for our whole family! Me being the nurse that I am I did ALL the research of ALL companies and decided to use CETUSA. The reasoning why is because they ask the right questions, they care about not only the student but the host family also. They ask the right questions to match the student to the host families life style. Long story short the first student profile that they sent me (among 9 profiles) was the PERFECT match! They asked for a personal letter about our family and they where not biased about our lifestyle or beliefs. They took into consideration that "No we are not a perfect family however we love to love any race, gender, or religion". I can now say that we have a fabulous foreign exchange student that is forever our child! My line of work as a pediatric nurse has always drawn me to put children's welfare first and one thing I can say about CETUSA is that is their concern and goal also. I believed In them so much that I decided to work for this company as a coordinator to ensure that these students from other countries have the best experience ever! Do your research! CETUSA may go beyond the rules of the regulated laws however it is for a reason.. To ensure that every child is safe (priority) and that it is an excellent experience not only for them but for the host parents also . I am a proud CETUSA coordinator!
