We decided to go with Cross Country Moving & Storage based on their yellow pages ad saying no hidden charges & one month storage free. We were using their "services" to finish packing (we packed most of it ourselves) a 2 bedroom condo, move the things to storage for a month & then to redeliver our belongings.
The initial estimate for the packing & moving the items into storage was $370. So we were shocked to say the least when the bill we were given was for $1449!!! They told us that our furniture would only be insured if we aloud them to wrap it...then charged us $787 in moving supplies!!!
5 weeks later we call their office to set up having our belongings delvered only to be told that we owe $225 in storage costs. We told them that not only were we told that the 1st month of storage is free but it also states it in their ad w/o any exclusions. They tell us that is only if we have our belongings in storage for 3 or more months. When we tried to refuse to pay it they told us that they will put our things up for auction!
So, we agree to pay it...mind you they only take checks mailed to their PO Box. They wouldn't set up a delivery time until they not only received the check but it also needed to clear. So, we call the office a few days after mailing the check & were told that they only check their mail on tuesdays & fridays. After a few more days they finally agree to set up a delivery date.........3 weeks later!!! Mind you we have an empty house & were staying in hotels waiting for our belongings. After throwing a fit they agree to deliver it in a week.
They first needed to fax us a binding contract agreeing to pay the delivery fee ($567) at the time the truck arrives to our house. So, we sign it but also make a note on it that we do not agree with the charges & are only paying in order to have our property back. We then fax it back. They call my boyfriend YELLING at him for doing that.
Finally we get our things delivered. The head mover tried to talk us into signing that the items were delivered in good condition before they even started unloading the truck....thank goodness we refused. Our $1200 bar was broken, $2000 armoire severely damaged & they lost a piece that held our glass table together making it completely useless.
We are now filing a claim with them as well as the BBB. If they do not offer a very good settlement we will be seeing them in court. Paid over $2000 for a bad headache & our favorite belongings ruined.
