I bought a 1992 Ford Escort LX-E and the first time that I put gas in it it started to leak. I researched it and found out there was a recall from the NHTSA ordering Ford to replace defective fuel pumps, regardless of age, mileage or ownership.

When I contacted Ford, I talked to someone in in their customer bad relations named Urjii (in bombay I assume, and was treated like I was contagious. I was told that they could not check my car records, and that they would not fix the problem unless I paid for it. Fords recall # is 92s54 and NHTSA's # is 92v-117.

Good luck regarding getting 14 year old car repaired

I don't know offhand when Ford recalled this model for fuel leaks, but many dealers no longer carry parts for vehicles over 10 years old. If the vehicle were repaired within the first 4-5 years, it would be a different story. But it may be difficult to get Ford to fix a 14 year old Escort at their expense, recall or no recall. Parts do rust out (probably less likely in Arizona, but gasolines do tend to be corrosive to some fuel system parts over time), and fuel pumps and other parts do leak and wear out over time. You would be better off having this fixed yourself rather than to fight a losing battle with Ford.
