Hello all!
I just wanted to write this to inform you and everyone else about how terrible of breeders Gemstone Alaskan Malamutes are. When we first got our puppy, nobody wanted her and they gave us half off of what they were asking. I had been keeping tabs on them for about a year or two at this point and had seen nothing but positive reviews of them. We decided it would be best to meet in a public place, for safety reasons, and they were two hours late. When they finally arrived, I figured they would pull the puppy out of the cab of the truck, since it was originally $1000+ dog. Nope.
They pulled it out of the water filled bed. It was soaking wet and hiding under the tool box. It was a red flag, but at that point, I was willing to pay the money just to ensure the pup would not go home with them; people who obviously don't know what they're doing. It was clear at that point that they were just backyard breeders. All of the AKC papers checked out and the mother and father met my standards. We both signed a contract stating their conditions and that we would both hold to them. One of the things stated was that the pup would be registered in my name and that I would recieve the papers in the mail.
Another thing, which is typical of every breeder, that if something were to happen and we could no longer keep the pup, that we would return it to them so they could rehome her. Well the time has come and we are afraid we will no longer be able to keep the pup. I hate to see the pup go, but I'm just not sure if we can make things work and the pup needs someone who can provide the necessary care. I contacted one of the owners and tried my best not to sound like a disgruntled customer and made it very clear that I was not trying to cause her or I any problems, but I was going to have to give the pup back and requested a full refund due to the fact they were just going to turn around and sell her and make their money back.
This is where it gets interesting. The puppies were born in August of 2013. In February of 2014 I contacted her and asked her where the AKC papers were at and she informed me that she still hadn't registered the puppies because she didn't want to pay the standard $30/dog fee. I told her that I thought we, the owners, were supposed to pay the fee since they were going to be in our names and even offered to, but she read the message and never replied. I contacted her several times after that about the AKC papers and she always brushed it off. So at that point we decided that maybe if she ends up growing into a breed-worthy dog, we would get her thorougly checked out and possibly consider the breeding option (one of the things we would have had to pay more money for if/when she was to be registered).
WELL it's now May 2014 and I still haven't recieved the AKC papers. Now back to contacting her about the refund. At this point, I informed her that the contract had been voided due to the fact that they didn't hold up on their end since I never got the papers. Hence why I was asking for a full refund in exchange for the pup. She kept telling me over and over that it's on her website that once you pay, even if you have to return the puppy (due to unforseen events or death of the pup on their part) there will be no refund what so ever. I told her that I did not sign a contract informing me that a refund would not be available, nor did she tell me when we met that it wouldn't be an option.
I informed her that it doesn't matter what her website currently says because she can easily change it at any time to suit her current situation. She then told me that the puppies were registered when they were born in August 2013 (even though I have proof in Feb 2014 they still weren't registered). She also told me that she asked me if I wanted to pay the $25 to get her registered in my name, and I told her no. Which is a complete lie. She never once asked if I wanted to pay, and I even offered to pay in Feb and she just kept brushing it off. She went on and on about how I was making it up, etc. At the end of the conversation she told me, word for word, "if u want the papers u can go cry about it". Yes, she really told me that.
She also told me that if I wanted to resell her I could and that she didn't care (also her voiding the contract). That is how she chooses to run her business. I promise that when we were discussing buying the pup, she used proper grammar and was completely respectable. I just really want to prevent others from following in our footsteps and ending up in a mess like this. We love our Mal and there is absolutely nothing wrong with it's health and it is a very sociable dog, we just have some things going on so we cannot keep the pup anymore.
But due to how she's acting, even if we do decide to sell the pup instead, we won't get nearly enough since we don't have the AKC papers we were promised from the beginning. I know I can't shut them down with this report, but even if it makes one person take their business elsewhere, that's enough for me. Backyard breeders who do it for the money rather than the dogs need to be stopped. If you are interested in purchasing a Mal and can afford to pay their price, save a little more and take your business elsewhere. To someone who really knows what they're doing and cares about the dogs and not the dollar signs. Gemstone Alaskan Malamutes cannot be trusted.
