On Tuesday evening March 10, 2015 my son and his girlfriend who are both 20 young adults went to Jackson Hewitt at the Walmart location in Peachtree City, GA to have tax returns done. A lady named Michelle Rodriguez helped them. They asked what the cost would be to file their returns since they had an ad on the radio to come let them do your taxes and get a free walmart gift card. We start as low as 38.00. She told them both that their returns would be anywhere between 80-85. They asked about the 38.00 deal. She stated that was just for the basic state tax. They agreed since she told them they both would get a 100.00 gift card so in their minds they just got taxes done for free and could pocket 15-20 dollars. Once all said and done he was charged 378.95 on a basic W2 1040 EZ. She was charged 395.95 on a basic 1040 EZ. Asked why so high she exclaimed that's what the computer charged. I went back with them and they were closed.
I went back Wednesday morning because they were to open at 10am. I handed a lady named Temi Lafola my son's W2 asked what they would charge. Mind you I just went to H & R Block to see what their chargers were which was $75.00. She Temi informed me that t he charge e old be about 80.00. I asked about the sign for 38.00. She explained that was for a basic state return. And she informed me she could not give an accurate amount. I told her she has to know a estimate with her being an accountant. She replied probably about 80-85. I said are there hidden fees? She looked at W2 again and said no this was a very simple 1040 EZ. So I gave her both kids returns and said explain this. All she said was Oh wow! Then she started recanting. And she informed me they got a 100 walmart gift card they had to add to fees. I said wait a minute the cards are free. Then I pointed out that she charged them to file a state return. Well guess what? The state of TN does not have a state return and you charge 84.00. And according to your signs all over the walls and Internet it states if your returns had a mistake they would be free. She argued no mistake was made. I said it shows in your cost state tax fee 84.00. She still argued that Tennessee has a state tax. I called the district office left message for Dennis Smith who is the supervisor. Temi called back Wednesday afternoon late and said they would reimburse 39.00 for the mistake on the state taxes. I said no mam your sign says it free if you make mistake and full amounts must be returned and besides you charged 84.00 for a false charge and only willing to pay 39.00. So then while at the location she pulled a stack of returns out of file cabinet and proceed to go through naming the amounts of what others paid with their personal info facing us. She was advised that was none of our business and she was breaching others personal info. She put them up.
Finally on Thursday afternoon late Dennis Smith the district manager called and said he was only charging 178.00 instead of 394.00 I said no sir your sign states free if you make a mistake. He said no because they have to recover the 100 gift card. I told him bs. Have not heard from anyone since. On Wednesday I filed complaint consumer advocate agency, walmart HQ, Jackson Hewitt HQ, went to the PTC PD about breach of personal information. Filed a 14157-A form with the IRS. Contacted all news media outlets and filed complaint with the attorney general office. I even sent the President of Jackson Hewitt a lengthy email with all documents as well as Dennis Smith again. And to date nothing from Jackson Hewitt or Walmart. This is highway robbery and Fraud. If you advertise something free then it's free not included in fees. If you have signs everywhere that says if you make a mistake or its free then by golly abide by it. This company is very fraudulent. Tonya Boyd (((redacted)))
