Greg Moody's Karate for Kids program is a ripoff. We signed our child up for the initial several weeks after which began a constant barrage from staff asking us to sign contracts. We did sign a contract with the understanding that, should our child no longer enjoy karate, we would be released from the contract.

The staff constantly -- often weekly -- asks parents into private "sessions" to discuss their "balance." Or they want you to buy more and more equipment, weapons, extra classes, uniforms -- it's neverending! Even when you pay monthly for the lessons, they never tell you when you sign up that you have to pay $70 every third month for graduation!

I explained time and again that my child could do karate for as long as I could afford it, and he enjoyed it.

In late February, my child decided he really wanted to swim. I contacted the karate for kids staff at the North Campus and was given a phone number of the credit services to discontinue automatic withdrawals. I was explicitly told that was all I needed to do. Now, several months later, they claim we still owe them money -- even though our child has not participated in karate since February!

BUYER BEWARE -- Karate for Kids is a moneymaking scam -- My other children will certainly never paricipate in Greg Moody's Karate for Kids.

There Is NO Scam At Karate for Kids

A scam is an illegal plan to make fast money using deception and to disappear before the victim is able to recover their money. The Black Belt Academy has been in business for well over 10 years in Scottsdale and has always treated students honestly, honorably and legally not at all what you'd call a get-rich-quick money making scam ran by rip-off artists. Teaching students how to become leaders and black belts is what the AZ Black Belt Academy & Karate for Kids does. It takes years to get students to Black Belt, and it requires commitment and dedication from both the student and the academy. Before the kids are even allowed to go into regular class, it is explained very carefully that the Black Belt Academy isn't a day care that kids go to for a while, it's a leadership training program. It is made it clear to both parents and students that the certain programs are designed to train students to Black Belt and they take more than a few months. There is not a program available at the AZ Black Belt Academy & Karate for Kids in which kids can take martial arts for a little while every program has a clearly defined length of training. To avoid misunderstandings about the training commitment, a membership agreement is used to provide a legal guarantee for both the student and the academy - and it clearly defines what is expected from both the student and the academy. No one should EVER sign anything that they don't understand and agree to. The academy staff even goes over the requirements of the agreement with each new student - just in case they are the type of person who does regularly sign forms without reading them first, and everyone is always given a copy of everything they've signed or initialed. Not wanting to pay anymore for something you've purchased and used, is not, and never has been, a valid reason to not pay for it. Unfortunately, sometimes people don't want to pay for things they've bought and will resort to slander to justify their actions.
