This tired old scam never seems to go away, so perhaps shining the light on these roaches will flush them out. There are a lot of people who have been affected by the downturn in the economy. Many are out of work and are desperate to put food on the table. As such, some shady businesses are more than eager to prey upon those who are down on their luck. One such company is LA Sports Marketing.
At LA Sports Marketing its the same song and dance. This company boasts about its' professional relationships with major league teams, but in reality they are nothing more than a door to door solicitation service; selling coupon books, oil change gift cards, or whatever "promo" they have for that day. Of course they do not offer a paid salary; instead they prefer you to work solely on commission. This company is not even remotely associated with the professional teams they claim as their clients. In other words this is a pyramid scheme company.
With the number of entry-level sports and entertainment marketing jobs listed on job boards these days, you would think that either college students interested in sports and entertainment marketing are in short supply or that our entire economy is based on leisure activities. Hopefully, you know that both of those explanations are preposterous, so what gives? The true story is that real sports and entertainment marketing jobs are extremely hard to come by and in very high demand.
Most of the job postings that you will find in these fields are posted by companies who are using a very loose interpretation of the terms "sports marketing" and "entertainment marketing" to attract the eyes of wet behind the ears college students. When I think of sports or entertainment marketing, I think of working on corporate sponsorships of events or endorsement deals. I don't think of going door to door selling books of coupons for a dollar off of a hot dog at a Dodgers game.
OMG, I have never felt so cheap and scammed in all my life. Now don't get me wrong I am working on my bachelor's degree (may 2012) and I have my associates but even a middle school graduate doesn't deserve the slave like conditions of this company. First they get you all excited that you will be working with la sports teams and Las Vegas Resorts to create marketing campaigns for these repective companies. They said in my second interview I would be shadowing one of their executives for the day (9-6) so I could see the job at hand.
My first red flag should have been the waiver I signed saying that I would not get paid for the day but I looked passed it. They make you dress in a suit and tie and 5 of us packed in a van and we were dropped off in the middle of west hollywood with a bunch of quiznos coupuns and told to sell to people on the street and random business's. I felt so stupid walking into these business's one I wasnt getting paid, I couldn't go home because a van dropped me off and people just love when you go into their business's and try to sell them something.
Even when you get hired at this place it is all off commision and one guy that was there for a month was so happy to get $45 for the day (sad). I couldnt wait to get home and write this. Part of our route was the walk of stars it was funny I felt the costume freaks out in front of the chinese mann had more of a reason to be there than me. I had more repect for them than the solicitors that sell these quiznos coupons on a daily basis.
The only positive thing that came out of this whole ordeal is the fact that the manager has D cups and she bent over I know on purpose and she had half dollar size nipps. It was another way I know she roped me in. But the face was pretty bad. It looked like her face caught on fire and someone put it out with a cheese grater. If I can save one person from this misery I have done my job. Remember LA sports Marketing is a scam. They also had a sign for the better business bureau which just proves to me how BBB is a scam too and can be bought for the right price.
