Our planned week long fishing trip to Red Lake Onatario for May 25th 2013 was cancelled due to a late ice out.We had to scramble to find a new location and one of the group remembered at fishing resort that was being advertised at a local sports show. The place was called Manitou Falls Camp and was located on the English River below Ear Falls Ontario.Being in a crunch for time we booked the trip.
The guy that booked the trip had spoken with the owner on several occasions and although he was a little vague in providing information about the camp he seemed very friendly. He stated he would not be at the camp when we arrived which seemed a little odd but everything seemed to be on the up and up.(We came to find out later the guy is not even allowed to enter Canada).
As we pulled into camp we immediately noticed that it appeared to be in a state of disrepair. The lodge had furniture and bags of who knows what piled all around it.(We were told later it had been vandalized by disgruntled employees the previous fall after they had not been paid for the work they performed the previous summer). The exterior of the cabins was also shoddy with obvious work needed to the roofs, porches, and windows and doors.
The interior of the cabins were also a mess. The first cabin they stuck us in had bugs in the shower and dried urine on the toilet seat. The floors were filthy and we quickly learned there was no hot water in the cabin and the toilet would not flush. They then moved us to another cabin with hot water and a working toilet or so we were told.
This cabin was equally dirty and the bathroom was a similar disaster.I would spend an hour that evening scrubbing it to make it usable. The silverware drawers had mice nests and feces in them and needed to be cleaned. At least we had working plumbing right? That would change by day 2.
The situation in the bathroom quickly deteriorated. The toilet would no longer flush unless you poured a bucket full of water down the bowl.Bad situation with 8 guys using 1 toilet. The water pressure in the shower dissapeared to just a trickle. If you were in the shower and someone else used water in the camp somewhere, you lost what little pressure there was.Not many showers taken on the trip.Gross.
On a positive note there is some excellent fishing to be had. Many large pike, walleye, perch, and smallmouth are available. Two of our boats leaked however and it was necessary to get on plane and pull the plug to drain the 10 or so gallons of water that had leaked in the night before. Also, the chest freezer in the cleaning house was not cold enough to freeze our daily catch so most had to be brought home unfrozen. It remains to be seen how that will affect the condition of the fillets.
One last note that is really very serious. Two gentlemen staying in the cabin behind us were given bad gas.Their boat broke down 15 miles from camp. They spent 2 whole evenings on an island with the wolves howling around them,no food but the fish they caught, and no shelter other than what they constructed. No one working in the camp, which only had 4 cabins booked, noticed that they were missing. If not for another boat happening upon these guys its hard to tell how long they would have been stuck there.
It is a real shame that this camp has degraded to the state it currently is in.Good fishing and pretty scenery only to be spoiled by crummy accomodations.Maybe they will get it fixed up and get some good management running the place. The locals all seem to know about the condition of the place as most we talked to in town just shook their heads when we told them were we were staying.Just do some serious research before commiting to staying here.
