Metro Rewards & Trust Metro Rewards & Trust "Winning Final Notification" SCAM LETTER!! Toronto Ontario Canada
I received a letter with an enclosed check for $4875.00 telling me that I was a winner of DE-LOTTO NORTH AMERICAN SWEEPSTAKES LOTTERY ON SHOPPERS on Friday August 29th, 2008 in the 2nd category.
The letter claimed that I was entitled to the sum of $125,000 US dollars from total prize money of $4 Million US dollars that was shared among 31 winners. It listed a claim number and said it had been assigned to a North American Claims Affiliate and to expedite processing, they enclosed the check to pay the applicable government taxes of $2,875 by WESTERN UNION OR MONEYGRAM.
It said not to attempt to use the check until I called the claims/disbursement manager MR. JOE MARTINS and urged to keep the winning confidential until the claim was processed.
I called the phone number (1-416-824-9178) and a man with a very thick middle eastern accent answered. He assured me that this was not a scam and told me that I should deposit the check into my bank account. I told him that I did not have an account. He then told me to open up a checking account and deposit the check and to call him back so that he could arrange to have UPS or FED-EX send me the rest of the money. He said to make sure I kept my claim number private. He also said that I needed a photo ID to be able to receive the rest of the money.
As soon as I hung up, I immediately researched the company online and found that this was a scam intended to rip you off through your bank account info. Even though I did not give out any information, I am still angered and annoyed that this was even sent to me. If I was a little more trusting/naive, I could easily have fallen for this and been taken advantage of. I wonder how many people they have ripped off already. It is disgusting that these people can get away with this. Something should be done to stop this and bring these people to justice.
