I had been speaking to MJ of MJ Entertainment by telephone and he told me that he had an artist in my area that he wanted to get stage time. I had an upcoming event at a small venue and I booked his artist to perform. Not long after, MJ came to me with a business opportunity that would be very lucrative for me and would not require any investment on my part. I was excited about the opportunity.
Weeks later, I met MJ in person and he seemed very knowlegeable about the entertainement industry. He told me about a concert he was putting together in my area and that he already had more investment capital than he needed. All he had to do was straighten out the details with the city. It was during this meeting that he told me that his company cleared $2.5M last year.
The next day, we had another meeting and that is where the huge name dropping got out of hand and raised red flags. He began to speak about artists he had business relationships with and even flashed a fake black card that he kept partially covered.
The following day, I received an investment proposal for the concert he spoke to me about. He was seeking $225K in investment for a show he previously said was already financially backed. In the proposal, the Headlining artists name was mispelled and the venue capacity was overstated. MJ promised investors a 30% ROI.
Before presenting this opportunity to any of my contacts, I began researching MJ on the internet. I found 3 rip off reports involving him and couldn't find anything affiliating him with any concerts that were remotely as large as he was claiming. When I requested a standard business credit profile, he said that he would provide me with his whole portfolio. I never received it.
MJ then began making promises about bringing artists I knew in front of major labels and stated that his relationships were so strong that he can "Make things happen". I questioned his integrity, so never presented any artists to him.
When I made further inquiries about documentation on MJ Entertainment in order to present this proposal to companies I had relationships with, I was informed that there were already negotiations in progress with some large companies. A week or two later, I received another email requesting sponsorship in exchange for advertisng and seating at this same event he was putting together. These sponsorship packages were as high as $100k.
I have since found that he forwarded music to me and used email headers and signatures from a reputable entertainment company. I later confirmed that the music was not from this individual and MJ was being deceitful in using this persons email signature.
Most recently, I requested contracts for the original project as well as copies of standard agreements my artists would be required to sign with MJ Entertainment and Michael Jordan has refused to provide me with either. I also requested his credit profile sheet. MJ stated that he wasn't interested in providing any information, not even his physical business address unless companies were ready to invest in the show. He told me that he will not give me anything in writing explaining what his relationship would be with artists I worked with unless I first brought the artists to him and we all discussed an opportunity.
As for the original opportunity, he promised me a position as Tour Coordinator for a major artist. This tour is already in progress and he's giving me story after story explaining why I am not yet involved with the tour and why I don't have any contracts or tax forms yet.
