I've been getting ripped off by National Readers Service. They started first by calling to say I was enterd into a contest to win money and I would receive a free watch based on my mastercard use. When I realized it was going to be too expensive I called to cancel. When they were still taking money out of my account I called back and they told me I had only cancelled my entrance in their contest. They did reduce my payment amount.

This was several years ago. Recently they called me and said since my card had change they hadn't been able to charge me for several months. Also that I had already agreed to renew my contract. I didn't recall this and feeling kind of obligated to pay I gave them my number. Now instead of taking just the $59.60 for the magazines each month for 30 months they have taken out two payments of $390.84.

I'm trying to figure out how I can get out of this. All I can think is to close my account and tell them to do whatever. My credit's already bad due to late payments on student loans and credit cards so I'm not worried about my credit. I don't know anything except my 6 month old baby so they can't really take anything of value. If anybody has any ideas or suggestions please help me!!

one if someone calls you and wants your credit card number dont give it to them. and two if u call the company back and tell them u cant make the payments then im sure they'll just try to tell u that they can lower your payments or put u on the student program and you'll only get 3 or 4 magazines. so when u call make sure u are being strict about what your saying and tell them u cannot make your payments and u want to cancel your account. and if they say they can't or wont then let them know you'll be contacting your lawyer and calling them back in a few days. (you dont really have to call a lawyer, but the idea will scare them and they'll cancel your service.) remember its just an everyday person on the phone and you dont get any special degree to be a telemarketer. so it's most likely a student or someone who will work at a crappy job until they can find a better one.
