The OP stated that this vehicle was a 1985 model, which is more than 10 years old. The idea that you continually poor money into a car that is of that age, knowing very well its going to have more problems isn't worth the money you could use for a down payment on a new vehicle. If I have a 1985 clunker and the engine goes out, im not going to fix it either, however, if it needs a 400 dollar pump, I would consider. That was the point.

"...we would rather buy a new car for the amount that it cost us to get the motor fixed." Where did you plan on buying a NEW car for the cost of an engine repair? I ask, because if I can find NEW cars for as little as a few thousand dollars, I need to start buying them myself and reselling them. New cars everywhere I see, sell for anywhere from $15K-$60K. If I can buy them for about $1000-$4000, and resell them for $15K-$60K, whooooeeee!...I'll be rolling in money. Just curious. Maybe we can do some business.
