It started as Aria, went to GetSmart Visa and then Providian. Now, we are sending payment to Card Service Center and are paying 29.9% interest on a card who's payment history is excellent. I called CSC and was asked if I was sent a letter with the option to Opt Out. That never happened. I called Providian about this and was told that was not an option. I would not have been able to opt out. Something is very wrong with this. Happiness to those who didn't get stung but there are many who did.

I also have a Providian account that had the interest rates jacked up, opened under pre-approved status with a $2500 UNSECURED initial limit in August of 2000. When they pre-approved me for this account, I had an existing account with them. Odd that after giving me another account they didn't want it open. But in any event, and to Providian's defense, they mailed Opt-Out letters 60 days in advance to all cardholders affected. If you chose to Opt-Out ( as I did ), Providian would close your account to future use, freeze the interest rate and allow you to pay the balance due with pre-change terms and no negative reporting. Providian and other credit card bank can do this ( periodic review ). It is in the fine print of every bank's Card agreement. Providian has been very good to me. Years ago when I had poor credit from losing a job, Providian was flexible and willing to believe in me. They taught me how to build and properly use credit. In closing, I suggest you call and talk to your creditors when you don't understand the terms or have a problem. Ask for a supervisor if you don't get satisfaction, and avoid AT ALL COSTS ever being late with EVEN ONE payment. With some credit card banks just one late payment can trigger interest rate and terms changes that can really sting your wallet.
