This job is not for anyone newly married or with little children. The very first thing you need to do is go to your nearest DMV and pick up a CDL hand book and read it all. Keep in mind the portions like Passenger endorsement which are not needed unless your driving a bus, limo or taxi. At the end of each little chapter are questions that may be on the written test. That's the best way for a head start.
Most recruiters have never been in a truck so they do not understand what is needed for someone to do the job properly. It is the same for dispatchers or driver Managers. Most are college grads who think they know it all. Skills needed are basic math to do the log book and keep track of hours of service to know if you can take a load and deliver.
If your new to driving a truck you don't know squat. You still need to learn to drive in all weather conditions. Then drive mountain passes and how to drive those in snow and ice. Those speed limit signs are there for a reason so follow them. that means a lower gear than on flat land.
Once you are out from under a trainer shut your mouth and do what your told. They push you for a reason. Once you prove yourself you will be taken care of. Keep in mind that everyone complains about their job in this industry. Hurry up and wait is part of the job. Just get the job done. If your crossing the border take the initiative and call ahead. This job takes a lot of common sense that can't be taught you either have it or go flip burgers
