I have read so many reports about people and being ripped off by exchange policies and so on and so forth.....here is my take. I was a retail manager and I can tell you I am shocked and appalled at some of the stories I read about how management treats the customer. If I was managing that store good god she is exchanging a coat for her daughter for Christmas. Take the high road and match the price for her. $5 is not going to make you lose your job and possibly will even get you some kudos with upper management for treaing the customer like a human being instead of a criminal. No wonder so many people come on this site and post things that upset them. If you lose your job as a manager for doing that go into your next job interview and tell that story about going above and beyond customer service and see what happens. Believe me most companies want managers or service reps like that. i know I would be impressed if someone did that for a customer. You all are being short sighted about the receipt thing. To be honest I feel that you all are just looking to start drama. This customer should have been shown some respect and the manager should have exchanged her coat at sales price just to say "Hey your daughters Christmas present was damaged eventhough this is going to hurt our bottom line...I will go above and beyond my call of duty to make sure your daughter gets what she wanted for Christmas" This is my personal opinion and I respect everyones opinion even though i disagree.

When you do not have a receipt, the computer takes the lowest selling price of the item in the last 90 days. How does Target know if you bought that item when it was on sale or when it was regular price? If you had had the receipt, it would not be a problem. In fact, if it was shown that the item was bought on sale, you would receive a price guarantee, which means you could buy the same item and pay the same sale price even if it is not on sale at the time (The only way I really see that this is effective is for clothing - a shirt that was a size too big or small. Or a toy that was defective and you just want the same one). Basically, the point is - Have a Receipt. Or the credit/debit/gift card that paid for the item.

I am not really complaining about $5, it's five dollars, it's not going to break my bank, but it might someone else who is going in there to do an EVEN EXCHANGE. I was not trying to get my money back or make an exchange for something different. If that had been the case, I could have understood their policy and would never have said a word. Why I am being criticized for not asking everyone who bought my daughter a birthday gift for a receipt is beyond me. Normally I don't return gifts, if we can't use them we give them to charity, this particular toy would have been useless had we given it away, as it was damaged goods! I am just sounding off my experience as I find it frustrating and bad business. I for one won't shop there anymore.

It was $5, what are you complaining about?! If that's their policy, then you have to abide by it. Read any store's return/exchange policy which will clearly state for most that if an item was bought @ the sale price, it will be valued @ the sale price upon return unless noted on a receipt. It's not Target's fault; it's your friend's for not giving you the gift receipt.

"No, I am not kidding, did you read what I wrote? It was a gift, which is why I did not have the receipt." Of course you did not have the receipt, it was a gift. Who was the gift from? Target always gives an additional gift receipt for situations such as these. Perhaps you should have talked to the person who gave the gift and asked for the gift receipt. That is the reason when I shop at Target for a gift, I always tape the gift receipt to the gift, all to avoid situations such as these.

No, I am not kidding, did you read what I wrote? It was a gift, which is why I did not have the receipt. Do you really think I would go through the trouble of posting this on this website if it wasn't so ludicrous? Of course it's crazy, yes, it would have been nice I suppose had we been given a gift receipt, however, we can't control the world and what everyone does. I don't really give a rats behind if it was on sale a day ago, two weeks ago, a week ago, or whenever, the bottom line is that I was making an exchange, giving them back their defective merchandise to get the identical thing (with exceptions noted in my original complaint) who CARES if it was on sale the week before? It's an EXCHANGE...so with or without a receipt it should make no difference.

You can't be serious with this report. I mean come on! Some customers complain about everything. Most companies have an exchange policy; if you have the receipt, they will do an even exchange for the product. However, if you don't have a receipt and an item was previously on a sale price, then the item would be valued at the sale price. What is the problem? If you had the receipt you would've got what you needed with no additional $$ required but you didn't have the receipt. Next time take it with you and if you don't have it, prepare for some surprises.

Let me start by saying that I am an ex-employee of Target. I worked there for 3 years as a manager and what you were told was a bunch of BS. First off if the toy that you were returning was recently on sale the extra 5.00 dollars is pointless if you were doing an even exchange. That's what an even exchange is, you are exchanging for the exact same product regardless of the price. If you were to take the toy in and do the exchange while it was on sale then they would owe you the difference from the regular price to the sale price. So you basically had to pay 5.00 dollars because you didn't have a receipt. That is the direction Target is taking their business. They changed their return policy for a few reasons, 1 They are doing whatever they can to get a leg up on Wal-Mart. They take and will keep a consumers money no matter the cost. 2 Target just like other retail companies got ripped off by a dvd/video game scam. The dvds and video games were stolen prior to shipping to retailers, so when consumers bought the dvds/video games there was either no disk or a blank disk inside the case. Target was not the only retailer effected by this, but they were the only retailer to change their return policy because of it. They got ripped off, so they decided to punish the public. In this case it sounds as though the TMs have been instructed by the management team to do whatever they can not to lose money. Maybe the store is a poor performing store so they need to raise the profit, from what it sounds, the kind of treatment they give out makes them a poor performing store. But in the end here is Targets stand on unhappy consumers, and this was told to myself and others by high upper level management. Even if you're never going to shop at Target again, think about this, while you and others have been standing in line to do a return, in most cases 10 times as many people may be walking into the store to shop. With the number of people coming into shop outnumbering the number of people doing a return then as far as Target is concerned there is no reason to care about the people doing a return and satisfying them, they've got 10 times as many people walking in to spend their money. And to top it all off, one of Targets most prominent policies is if there is a dispute over the cost of an item and the prices are within 5.00 dollars the cashier is to change the price to satisfy the consumer. And since they didn't and didn't even offer it to you that tells me that this store is corrupt and nobody should shop there.

I agree completely....it's all nonsensical. That's why I refuse to buy anything from that store anymore. If they needed my $5 that much, then apparently I am shopping in the wrong store! And so are the people that buy gifts for my family there...MGMT needs to pay attention.

I did ask to speak to mgmt. They told me they were "unavailable". I elected to not make a jerk of myself and just pay the additional monies, after all, if Target needed my extra 5 bucks to keep their operation open, who was I to say anything? My personal opinion is that if they don't want my business, they made that very clear at that moment. We give to charity, just didn't realize Target was a "charity". wonder if we can get a write off?!

That seems totally non-sensical to me to charge you for an even exchange. Who cares if they person had bought it on sale? Weird.
