You have a legal right to dispute the debt under the FDCPA. Some companies require written documentation of dispute, some will take it over the phone. If the account is truly not yours, there is not a lot they can do to you. However in an age of identity theft, there is the possibility that someone opened the account with your information as well. In the end, by disputing the debt, it does not step up collection activity. It actually stops collection activity until they provide validation of the debt.
