A salesperson from Wade Odell Wade came out to our 1 BR apartment in NJ and quoted us approximately $2400 for a move to CA. We also received a quote from another moving company that we found on movingscam.com, University Van Lines in Rahway, NJ. University quoted us $3800. We decided to choose Wade Odell Wade based on their lower quote. A few days later my wife and I decided to have WOW add 200 lbs. to the quote just to make sure we wouldn't go over the estimated cost. This brought our new total up to $2578.86 for an estimated weight of 2541 lbs.

Between that time and our move we didn't add any items of significant weight. In fact, we threw out a number of items that would have been counted in with the original estimate. On the day of the move the movers couldn't have been more professional and helpful. However, I was never given an opportunity to view the weighing of the shipment. On September 8th or 9th I received a call from WOW to review the costs of the move and to authorize payment by credit card. It turns out the shipment had actually weighed almost 4000 lbs. and the cost would be over $3800. Although a $1300 difference may not be a lot of money for some people, for my wife and I it is a significant amount. I expressed my disappointment with the inaccuracy of the quote and I was informed that I had the option of disputing the weight. In order to dispute, I would be required to drive down to my local weigh station to watch the weighing of the truck. Although I didn't doubt the actual weight of the shipment, only the accuracy of the quote, I agreed to go down to the weigh station.

However, when my wife called back a few hours later to question how the quote could have been so grossly inaccurate she was told that it's not uncommon for quotes to be inaccurate and that it was probably our fault for putting extra stuff on the truck. It was very disappointing that WOW attempted to shift the blame to us without even entertaining the notion that the quote may have been inaccurate. Despite this, I went down to the weigh station to make sure a mistake hadn't been made on the weight. Once again the movers were very professional and helpful. Once they had unloaded the truck back at our apartment I drove out to the weigh station with them to check the weight of the truck again. It turns out the weight was over 4000 lbs.

We have since paid our bill in full but we feel very misled by what we believe was a lowball quote. WOW's attempt to blame us for the mistake is very disappointing and unprofessional. If University hadn't quoted us $3800, exactly what the move ended up costing, I may be more willing to agree with WOW's explanation that quotes are inaccurate. In a similar incident, my cousin and her husband are preparing for a move from NY to CA in October. They also brought in WOW, along with 5 or 6 other companies, for a quote on their 1 BR apartment. They were quoted $2200 by WOW, almost $400 less than the next lowest quote. These two incidents may not be enough to constitute a pattern but they certainly leave a negative impression. My intention in writing this is not to get any type of refund but to make sure that this type of activity is brought to light and that other people aren't misled by WOW in the future.
