Tell us has your experience with this business or person been good? What's this?
When I called them for service, Don, the representative, told me they were having a special for $29.95 for service call. The appt. was set up for 3 pm the next business day. At that time I also asked him if there were any other charges, he stated PLUS parts and labor.

The technician came out and spent 2-3 minutes making an adjustment (with his hands- no tools req'd). He then billed me for $118.95 Included in this charge was an "operator charge." The tech, George told me that this was standard, since the techs were subcontracted. He then gave me a $20 coupon credit and presented me with a bill for $98.95.

I told him what Don had quoted me and he did not comment. After the tech left, I called Don back. He told me that the charges were for the technician's knowledge and experience. He then added that he had to go, because other calls were coming in.

I called back and asked to speak to the owner, and was told that the owner never comes in, but that I should leave a message for Steve. Steve never called me back. Until today, the only address I had for them was a PO BOx based out of Hurst, TX. I sent a letter of complaint to that address, but have heard nothing back.

I felt that the company should have told me there was an automatic operator charge added to the invoice in addition to the $29.95!

Iv'e seen a lot of "former" employess and disgrunteled consumers b***h about Pete and his tactics and like anything else some may feel taken advantage of. But the bottom line is "Americas Choice" or "Garage Door Service Company" or Aaaa Allstate or any of the various DBAs we used throughtout were all completely above board and the marketing model Pete used was boarderline genius. David Dean in Atlanta and Chris Chapmen in Denver were just a couple of the tecnicians that were not only great techs but excellent sales people. That's what we wanted and thats who we hired. We wanted to sell you that's what we did and we were good at fron the initialphone call the the tech in the field. And we were good at what we did. We had a repair or replace warranty and offered service within two hours. I haven't spoken to Pete in years and we didn't part ways on good terms but I read these dumb a*s complaints and feel like people should know that this was and still is the best place to call if your garage door breaks. He changed the Yellow Page industry forever and I will always smile when I think about how long it took our competitors to catch on. He made the big boys blink without even trying. (Did we ever invert that blue ribbon for overhead?)

pete stephens' criminal background

#3Consumer Suggestion

It's no surprise Mr. Stephens is in the business of fraud. I am aware & have firsthand knowledge of his background. Mr. Stephens was involved in drug dealing & running before this business, along w/numerous other violent criminal acts which he should be in prison for; his family has a history of drug running & certain family members have served time for this which is where he learned the family trade. Mr. Stephens has been evading the IRS for since his only legitimate job out of high school (working as a waiter @ olive Garden for approx. 3 months!). He realized drug dealing & the criminal life was more lucrative & then began barrying money in his families backyard to avoid the IRS, all the while paying cash for big ticket items like boats & cars. Of course this was because he didn't have a job and couldn't verify his income. I suspect the garage door business is really most lucrative because its a front for other illegal activity.

Ok, this is for Paul from AZ: Your comments made no sense since first, you replied as "An ex-employee." Then you went on to say that this "Mike" is a competor, eyt we are speaking of Pete. No Mike here. The only way that you would know that "Marcus" is "Mike" is if you're involved, kinda' put your foot in your mouth with that one. Since, I get threatening and harassing e-mails from both which are one in the same, I wouldn't talk about anyone's lack of integrity if I were you. The real Overhead did not sue him or anyone else for that matter. So what company are you with, as Tempe, AZ has a numerous PDS or alias's in this location. It seems something isn't right with your intire rebuttal?????

I hate to burst your bubble April, but Mike was one of my competitors and he is not affiliated with PDS. Also, he was sued and paid damages to "The Original Overhead Door Co." This is a fact, I am sorry you are so bitter, and I appreciate you looking out for the consumer. Please get your facts straight before engaging in this trivial feud. Their are bigger fish to fry than Mike. I am the competition and have absolutely not one reason to lie. Good luck to all and i hope i helped clear the air. Stop with all the insults it only shows the lack of integrity you both lack.

Sorry you need to use a caculator in life. Keep rebuttaling, you're showing that you are a true idiot. You just keep digging yourself deeper and then you actually want to insult me, HA! I have busted PDS for their scam and now everyone knows. Pitty, they could have used you for a scap-goat still. You couldn't touch my education. It's sad that you're so pathetic. And the IRS has them on a tight leash, that I can assure you. So, keep digging yourself even deeper, it's showing your true intelligence.

To April from Waldork, MD. April, mm can stand for millimeter, yes you get a gold star for that. Also, "m" can stand for 1000. Therefore, if you multiply 1000x1000 or in basic math "mm" or "MxM" (m times m)you get 1MM or 1,000,000! How about that?! That's higher math that Waldork Elementary taught you. Sorry. PDS is not here in GA anywhere. Go back and check your obviously bad sources. Call PDS and ask if you can purchase any franchise in GA and they will sell it to you if they haven't already sold it to someone this quarter. Get a life April. There's no way you're going to catch Bryan or Pete, neither is the IRS or the state DOR's. They dont waste their time on this BS. Pete and Bryan got your goat and ain't going to let it go. Not in affiliation with PDS, yet you know who Brian Tindall is???? Stupid enough to place PDS's website which doesn't list ALL their franchises for a reason. Amazing how you also knew that. He "ain't" no "dummie" yet your an apparent ex-employee that is backing him, yet in the same lines busting on his illegal activity. By the way, the mm stands for millimeter, not million. You're an ex-employee that knows what your former employee spends on YP truck-size ads, hum? And you actually think he's smart because he illegally evades the IRS, etc.? OK! But you do realize that the IRS checks this site? Not too smart now, huh? I'm not blind by hate, I know that facts. You can dance around them all day, but in the end, people see you for what you're doing and up too and most are too smart for such BS. So by all means, keep digging yourself deeper.

To John in Charlotte, Pete ain't no dummie. He has ads in 11 YP's in this area and has "double trucks" because it places him 1st under garage doors. @$9000 per that means he spends over $1mm per year. Most of his income is tax free too! Guess why? ? He's too sly to catch so the others will just have to deal with him! Others being IRS and state DOR's too. April in Waldorf: You are blinded by hate. PDS isn't in ATL, go to their web-Precisiondoor.net and it should tell you where they're located. GA isn't on the list. I'm sorry, but you seem too dumb to find this out for yourself. Good luck in your pursuit of PDS. That's Pete in the ad next to the latest complaint, not PDS. Big difference. Pete doesn't equal Brian Tindle of PDS.

No one is forcing him to pay the amount of money you claim he pays for advertising. He signs the agreement no one else. You say he is a smart business man but that doesn't sound like the case to me. There is no need to have double truck segmented advertising just to be competitive.

The advertiser is placed to show people what's going on. EG. Atlanta or whatever they're to be called today, advertises this way, this shows people that they're lying. And PDS is in Atlanta and uses these names as above stated. You can get into this with anyone that has had anything to do with PDS and they will tell you you are wrong. If you can't handle the truth and want to continue to stick up for what we know you're way off on, well.... you have no one to blame but yourself for being so nieve.

#14UPDATE EX-employee responds

As you know those 2 people who wrote about the complaint about PDS in Atlanta were flat out wrong. PDS is not in ATL, but the company they complained about is. It's called America's Choice Overhead Door. I nearly fell out of my chair when I went to the top left of this report and found that one of the advertisers is noneother than the company that is being complained about! How funny is that?! It says they've been in business for 40 years. Pete Stephens is only 39 years old. He's now in 11 cities. CLICK here to see why Rip-off Report, as a matter of policy, deleted either a phone number, link or e-mail address from this Report. Tell this to Jacqueline in McDouough, I'm sure she will get a laugh too. He's ad says Atlanta Doors 800/XXXXX. This guy really has big uns to advertise next to his victims. Will you even print this since he's an advertiser? We'll see Ha! Ha!

If he's so dumb to let a stranger work on his door without a set price

#15UPDATE Employee

Fri, May 07, 2004

I've worked for Pete Stevens two times and yes he's the one in your complaint and on Dateline NBC in Jan 2001. He does have many ads in the Yellow Pages and it costs him a lot of money here in Atl. He told us he spends over $1mm per yr. just in these books. He also spends $150m on coupon mailers. That cost a lot of money so he has to get it back times 3 to make any money for himself. If we don't charge the customer a substantial amount we don't make any money for ourselves. David Dean the chief tech makes about $150k and works really hard for his money. Of course he gets the good spring jobs since he runs the place and has worked there longest. I just get the leftovers and it makes me mad. Maybe the customer should ask more questions before the work is done. If he's so dumb to let a stranger work on his door without a set price then he got what he deserved! I hate to rip old ladies and men, but a middle aged person with an education is not to be pittied, they should know better or pay up. We have to buy the same priced trucks and gas that they do. Give us a break. Pete's just smarter than the average customer and took out ads at his own expense. If they don't want to pay, they should just fix their own doors or call the "big franchise" (not PDS)in town. Talk about getting screwed. Pete will look like the Pope then!! By the way the most recent name is America's Choice Overhead Garage Door Co.

This company goes by several names and operates in several cities and states including Atlanta, Jacksonville, Dallas/Ft Worth, Denver, San Diego.

#16Consumer Suggestion

In each city they advertise with full page ads as well as some smaller ads in the the "garage Door" catagory. They then buy multiple full page ads in all the phone books in each city. Each ad has a different company name and a different phone number but they are all the same company. Most people, when they go to the yellow pages they start with the full page ads and call two or three companies to compare. What the consumer does not know is that are calling the same company. What they do at the company is that each time you call they watch your name and number come up on their caller ID and a different person will answer your call and quote you a different price or service feature then you think you have shopped different companies when in fact you called the same company. In quoting you prices they will say "Service call" or "service call plus parts and labor". The service call will be a different amount depending how many times you called their different ads. Then when the technician gets to your home the pricing can be huge. often 300.00 to 500.00 on some jobs that anyone else would do for 150.00 to 275.00. If you refuse the work then they hit you with the service call or the angry threats start. If you give in and do the work the quality of work and correctness of it most of the time is poor or incorrect. Most of the time the technician will do additional work or add on parts without your concent. When the bill is presented with the additional costs, and you refuse, the anger and threats start and surprisingly, most people give in and pay. The name of the man who owns this company is Pete Stevens. The company is based out of Jacksonville Beach, Fl. When you call your local city numbers the calls are fowarded to Jacksonville Beach, and you never know. Several people have attempted to contact him or to sue him. His people are trained never to foward any calls to him unless it is someone they already know or they are on an approved list. Additionally, he is not incorporated, so there is not an agent for service in a law suit. I have recently learned that when anyone pins him down, he avoids them, hangs up on them, or says that all of his technicians are "sub contractors" therefore he is not responsible. To conclude: Be very careful! Do not get or accept pricing over the phone. Like any repair, the technician needs to see it to give you an accurate price. Most companies will not charge you a service charge for this, some will. Do Not call the first several full page ads in the yellow pages and sometimes the smaller pages to the rear. I was a victim of this company, I did alot of research to find this out and I hope I have helped. Please post below if you have any comments or questions.

wrong about the ownership

#17Consumer Comment

Mon, January 05, 2004

Dale, This company is not owned by PDS it's owned by Pete Stevens of Jacksonville Beach, FL. He is the same person whose company appeared on Dateline NBC in Jan of '01 regarding ripoffs in home repair in the Dallas TX area. He has companies such as Texas Door, America's Choice Overhead Door Co. in ATL. He has servicemen in San Diego, Seattle, Calif., and I think Denver. They all operate the same- service call, parts & labor. Techs get about 20% of the GP. He has all the first 2 page ads in Yellow Pages of most of the 12 directories here. He also has the smaller YP ads under other company names. Spends about $800,000 a year in ATL ads alone! This is how he operates since he learned this technique from PDS's founder. PDS and Pete Stevens are not in business nor have they ever been. PDS is not in the state of GA nor have they found a sucker to purchase a franchise here. The name "Precision Door Service" has been around in ATL for about 40 years and is owned by a 60 year old man named Matt Bohn @770/736-7041. He charges about $195 for a spring job and obviously this isn't the same outfit as the franchise. He does all the work himself. I've read Dale's diatribe about PDS and feel sorry for their blind hate. I do understand that there are a few exPDS franchisees that have started a class action suit vs. PDS. Dale should get in touch with the original lady franchisee from Birmingham and spill the beans. You might be able to get some money back or at least be vendicated somewhat. Dale's wrong about the spring life. He's not very well versed in this either. Sorry Dale. Good luck with your revenge on PDS.

I hate to tell you this, but AAA and more than 30 other names are used by PDS. This is one of their most used names. They're famous for their $29.95 service call ad. You see, it's a ploy. They WILL charge the $29.95, but they will also charge you anything they could possibly charge you for. You were lucky, because you saw what he "didn't" do. If you hadn't been watching, the tech would have tampered with your door, breaking parts, then charged you anywhere from $750 to $1050 for parts and labor. Nice, huh? We have been fighting this company tooth and nail for some time now. They're a scam company, plan and simple. Take a look at our report. You'll find some useful links to reports made on them. The best thing to do at this point, DO NOT go to the BBB, they are aware of the situation and getting kick backs for their help, but DO go to your Attorney General. You can usually find their site via websearch. They will have a place to send consumer complaints and a place for reporting scams. Let them know everything and send them copies of the other 13+ reports on this company. Good Luck!
