Active Periodicals ripoff new wrinkle to telemarketing fraud BEWARE!! They will hound you but you have to be persistent in saying NO NO NO! Deerfield Beach Florida
Shame on them!! And shame on me for hoping these people would be willing to make amends for past dishonest behavior!!
I was lured into a too-expensive magazine subsciption scam. I am being billed $39.90 monthly for 3 magazines. I am supposed to be billed for 24 months and the subscriptions should last for 48 months. The telephone pitch described paying for 3 magazines, and receiving additional 3 free.
I was also promised the flexibility to modify my selections if I became dissatisfied with my prior selections. I sporadically received 3 magazines for approximately 1 year, then received notice of cancellation from publisher unless I renewed! So much for 4-year subscription!
To add insult to injury I was telephoned again. This time with an apology - apparently all the promised magazines were not available after all and they would make amends by adjusting my monthly payment down. Unfortunately their computer system could not modify my existing account so instead the "lower" payment would be opened as a new account, with the old account deleted. Plus, (I was re-assured), I could ignore the publisher notices and my magazines would continue to come.
Bottom line is that my credit card was billed twice this month, so now I am being ripped-off at twice the rate.
I will be calling my credit card company to attempt to stop these payments - but I'm not sure if it can be done. Somehow I provided authorization during the tape-recorded phone call.
