So here is the deal, I responded to an ad on Craigs List that read make $12-15 a week for two weeks, then 1000 to 1500 afterwards. Well, I responded, and got an interview.

I was one of about 5 people interviewing that day and was greeted with smiles all around. I didn't know what the company did, despite my questioning, both on the phone and in person. Despite that the money blinded me and I agreed to do a day of observation.

Well, 14 of my own dollars later I got to observe a "trainer" try to sell spa packages. That sent up a red flag, but at my interview following that, I got the job.

After doing much research and questioning I came to the conclusion it was a scam much in the way Amway. The packages they had me trying to sell were $47 yet the salons didn't pay for them or get any money out of it.

So after doing some observation of how people react and who "trains" who, as well as noticing how the "trainers" didn't seem to stay in the same place for more than a few months.

I also paid attention to the writing on the wall (quite literally in the form of a confusing poster) I decided to quit.

So do not be fooled by this place. The only way to make money is by selling these spa packages. There isn't a salary or a contract-just commission. So beware of Adefx

Ad Efx is sneaky, dishonest

#2UPDATE EX-employee responds

Fri, November 27, 2009

I'm not exactly sure how anyone can defend this company.  The ad-efx business model is similar to the model used by ds max - they make false promises to prospective employees, intentionally leave out important information during the intereview/hiring process and make up rules that violate state and Federal laws.

I had a bad experience with ad efx in 2006.  I saw an ad in the newspaper that specifically stated "Looking for students/graduates for entry level public relations and advertising positions."  I went to their Great Neck office, which was playing really loud music for 8:00 a.m., and interviewed with the manager.  He told me the company sold women's beauty products to prospective clients, including Fortune 500 companies, and that my job would be to work on a team delivering presentations to these people.  I was given the impression that I would be using computer programs and spreadsheets to make presentations to people.

At no point in the interview did he tell me that the job was to go to stores and offices and go up to random people to get them to purchase salon packages.  If he had been upfront about that from the beginning, I wouldn't have continued the interview, but I wouldn't have harbored any negative feelings about them either.

During my day of observation I watched one of the sales girls lie repeatedly to the customers about the services available in the salon package.  Employees were made to come in early for some odd pep talk where the word "Juice" was screamed over and over again, similar to a ds max office.  The employees were not paid for this time, which is important because they have to sign a piece of paper stating that they are independent contractors.  A real independent contractor is not required to attend an unpaid meeting.  It's New York State law.

There is no base wage, no minimum wage, no paid holidays or sick days or vacation days and no regulations to protect employees.  Employees pay for their own gas (the job involves a lot of driving around), get no help with health insurance and have no W-2 tax form.  That's the heart of the scam - the company avoids paying taxes while at the same time underpaying employees below the minimum wage.

I heard they relocated to Westchester and don't have an office in Great Neck anymore.  I hope this company goes out of business and the people who run it have to answer to the Attorney General's Office.

Not a Scam, but not high integrity or completely honest

#7UPDATE EX-employee responds

I am an ex-worker for this company in the last 2 months. My biggest complaints about the company are that on one would tell you up front that it's 100% commission, but that doesn't mean that a company is a "scam" it simply means that they people in the office do not have high integrity to let you know that up front. The reason that trainers are leaving is because once they reach a certain level (selling 50 certificates every week for 6 months) they get their choice of which office they'd like to be at. When i worked there there was no punctuality and little professionalism. You are a contractor of this company so no benefits are offered. Also NOT a sign of a scam, many jobs are contract work. The certificates work, i've had and used them. My friends have used them as well. It's a great deal and if the spa is not getting paid for the sale of the certificates then that's their fault. I've seen the process whereby a salon is approached with this method of marketing and at least for the office where I was they're told up FRONT about the fine print. Also, I'm not sure why people keep referring to Amway as a scam (i am NOT part of Amway and never would be) but it's not a scam. The old Amway had some distributors that were very dishonest and creating products that they were Amway's name on and keeping all of the profit. THAT was scam but by certain people and NOT by the company itself. Since then the company has changed it's name to Quixtar to rid itself of that idea. A scam is when a company pays you for recruiting people...Quixtar only pays you for sales made (like any other sales company). People that are in your "downline" can easily make more than people "above them" IF they work their butts off. A real scam is a normal business model. Will the janitor at your office every make more than the CEO? Even if he works ten times as many hours he'll never make more than even the regular cubicle office workers. now THAT'S a scam. It pays to become educated before making assumptions about business models that aren't "traditional".

umm Unfortunately you seemed to miss my point

#17Consumer Comment

Fri, February 24, 2006

Unfortunately you seemed to miss my point. The only people making money are at the top. It is a pyramid scheme that has been around for a while. The people in charge obviously make money, but they are doing so by going city to city trying to scam people into taking jobs from them. And the Salons take it as free advertisement. By the way, you ruined your Ethos when you mentioned how you 'knew' one of the people who made money with Ad-EFX

How is this a Ripoff?

#18Consumer Suggestion

Thu, February 23, 2006

I am confused at how this a ripoff? It sounds like solid commission sales job! Why does it sound unreasonable to only get paid when you make sales? If it is a sales job, doesn't paying for performance, for actually selling make sense? I just happened to meet a woman today who worked with that company, and made the kind of money suggested in that ad. It sounds like they have developed a really creative way to promote the salons involved.
