Hi. My American Express gold card was summarily canceled this weekend (despite payments being made on time, decent credit report, etc.) and in searching for similar occurrences I have alas found too many others who've had this experience (though not in recent months). I've been through three "service" reps, via email through the site and via its @askamex Twitter account to try to get an explanation and there's been nothing other than a vague comment about my credit report being in disarray (I bought one, and it ain't).

So these questions remain:

*Is there a way to reach a real person who has the power to at least discuss the account with me?

*My member rewards points are frozen. Are they lost (I've heard yes in some places, no in others, and you can buy them back from still other hapless victims).

*What's the impact on my credit report if Amex cancels me without a good explanation?

I welcome any advice you care to offer. This is, dismayingly, a rather common ploy that AMEX is using and I can't for the life of me understand what it's up to. But I'd like to get it resolved and appreciate any and all input.

They can cancel your card when they want, and you can renege when you want.

Here you go, but you probably aren't going to like it.  Take a Deep Breath.

Yep it is that simple because there is NOTHING you can do to force a company to continue to extend you credit.  They are granting you the privilege of using the card, and they can take it away.  The simple fact is that they are allowed to change their guidelines and you no longer qualify.

Yes you are "hurt" and "upset" that they cancelled the card and are probably taking it very personally.  But it all comes back to they no longer want to extend credit to you, it has nothing to do with you personally.  Even if you knew the exact reason and the reason was 100% false, you can ask them to review it but you still can't force them to re-open your account.

As to the effect on your credit report, generally closing an account won't take you from good to bad credit.  However, there are several factors that may determine the exact effect.  These include items such as how old is this card, how many other cards you have, what is your credit usage of the remaining cards.
