We recently became Uverse subscribers and are generally very happy with the service. However, there was no prior warning that HBO does not allow recording of their programming by Uverse customers through the desktop DVR box. (unlike Direct TV or other broadcast providers)

This is obviously a big pain in the a*s since nobody makes it a point to be home at X o'clock to watch their favorite show anymore. This isn't the 60's after all!

I have not been able to find any information in regard to this shortcoming at either ATT or HBO's web site. If I had known this in advance I would have stayed with Direct TV.

Customer service at Uverse acknowledges that the service is not available and indicates that "they are working on it". At this point I am going to drop HBO from my package since the value is not there unless I can watch when I want, either movies or series.

Sounds like a malfunction of the hardware/software.

You can record HBO shows on the Uverse AT&T DVR. You can't record to any third party equipment outside the uverse box's. The reason being the signal is digital encrypted because of copyright laws. If it is the uverse dvr box that isn't recording shows then it could be a software/hardware malfunction on that dvr box. You said Desktop DVR. Do you have a 3rd party (non at&t), computer based device your trying to record it to?
