Initially quoted me one set of charges, then after 9 months of many appointments where he did absolutely nothing but B.S. he tried to charge me a different rate and refused to continue my case without a balloon payment. 9 months for a bankruptcy, man am I stupid, but I trusted him so I guess I qualify as a fool too!

Most Chapter 7 bankruptcies are handled for a flat fee that is negotiated up front. Attorneys fees in a Chapter 7 need to be paid up front because they are dischargeable is not paid before filing the petition. Chapter 13 bankruptcies generally have the fees paid over time and are usually set by local court rules. What type of bankruptcy case did you file? How much did the attorney charge and how did he justify the balloon payment? By the way, 90% of an attorney's work is done prior to the filing bankruptcy is most Chapter 7 cases and mainly includes analyzing the types of debt, filling out the petition and advising the client on which type of bankruptcy to file.
