Complaint Description:
The company installed a faulty and non-working furnace in our home on 08/19/2013. The furnace was wired incorrectly, jumped and not grounded. On 08/19/2013, Ben Franklin Electric installed a one-stage Payne furnace in our home located at 1185 S. Holly St, Denver, CO 80246. The model number is PG8MAA036070 and the serial number is 3113A21884. Initially, it was agreed that this furnace would be installed by Bill, the company's owner because I expressed my concern with having the owner's son install our furnace because I expressed to the owner, I wanted it done right. The owner assured me that he would do the install and there was nothing to worry about. The day of the installation, Bill, the company owner, would leave his son and a female assistant to install the furnace.
This was surprising because I had expressed to the owner that I wanted him to personally do the install. The owner would drop them off at my residence and leave them alone to do the install against my wishes. After the install, the owner agreed to return soon to do a whole-house and humidifier install the following Friday, 08/23/2013. Therefore, we agreed to pay him an advance, $450 for the whole house fan. Bill, the owner, did not return Friday to do the install. It would take us another 11 days (08/30/2013) before we heard anything back from the owner via text. We expressed with the owner that we were growing inpatient and that our expectations were not met to have the whole-house fan and humidifer install. He stated he worked all the time and was busy and had to take a vacation.
Oddly, we thought this was unimportant as we were promised the install three-days after we had the furnace installed. The owner stated he would install the whole-house fan and humidifier on Friday, 09/06/2013. This was a no-show as we did not even receive a phone call even after my attempts to contact Ben Franklin. Afterwards, I would place numerous phone calls in an effort to contact the owner as it was my day off and time was of the essence. I received no response. The following days, I attempted to contact the owner again to schedule a time for the install and no response. Numerous calls and messages were placed and left but to no avail. None of the calls were returned. I even emailed the owner on 09/07/2013 via the company website and no response. On 09/11/2013, I was successful in contacting the owner via phone and I expressed my concern with the missed installs, bad customer service and accessibility issue.
It was near impossible to contact the company. The owner expressed how sorry he was and that he had been very busy. He again promised to show on 09/13/2013 to install the whole-house fan and humidifier. He did not show neither call. I called and left a message to express our wish for a refund of our advance of $450 which had been tied up for almost a month and to inform the company owner that we did not wish to move forward with any install from his company because of our difficulties we were experiencing. On 09/27/2013, I called a company, Cool Sunshine, to diagnose and potentially repair our existing humidifer. In the process of diagnosing the issue with the humidifer, the technician found that the furnace Ben Franklin had installed did not work. It would not fire up.
The furnace did not work! Upon further investigation, it was found the furnace was wired faulty, jumped with a low voltage wire and was not grounded. The ground had been cut. Wires were just hanging around the circuit board with no connection. Having found this out, I called the owner right away. This time he was available and I informed him of the findings with the furnace. I expressed with the owner that after all we had been through, I wished to no longer work with him in any capacity and to simply remove the faulty wired, non-grounded furnace which could have caused a fire in our home or would not have worked when we needed it the most to heat our home. The owner would make promises again to show on that same evening, 09/27/2013 to remove the furnace and again, a no show. He would promise again to show on 09/28 and 09/29 and again, a no-show.
The company owner will appear to be candid and frank and helpful in his suggestions in getting you the best deal, however, his actions will be the exact opposite. The company owner can be deceptive in his approach, but I am writing this to help someone else avoid the frustration and headache associated with "con" contractors out in the industry who just wants to make a buck!!
