I have been to several Bikram Yoga Studios, bust mostly in the Northern Virginia Area.
I am doubting its a scam, to be honest the studio owners are terrible at marketing. While each studio is individually owned, they are all very similar because they are franchises.
That said, during the classes (and when no class is in session) the doors to studios are ALWAYS LOCKED.
Its something I've always though was bad for business because they cannot have walkins of people interested in learning about it. The reason for locking the doors is that there is rarely a full time front desk person at most studios and it is for saftey and security of the students and their belongings while they practice.
The rule of thumb is that the door is only unlocked for 30 minutes or less PRIOR to a scheduled class. If you show up even a minute late you will not get in.
If you are curious about Bikram and want to talk to the teachers and or the studio owner, you need to find out when a class is scheduled and go there 30 minutes in advance. You will likely never be able to get them on the phone as the places I have seen, the teachers can be too busy dealing with students and payments during those 30 minutes, the phone is the last thing they worry about. If you do call, however, its during these 30 minutes when you will have most luck.
Good luck and be sure to get plenty of sleep and drink a few liters of water before hand to make your first time easier...
As someone who has done it for 5 years, more increasingly, I'll tell you if you can master this hot yoga it will make every other activity in life effortless in comparison.
