Club Fitness is charging me a cancellation fee, however, when I signed up I was told that if I paid for the more expensive plan I would not have one. I signed up at the Dogtown (St. Louis, MO) location.
I believe that I was lied to when I signed up. I went in to sign up with a mailer advertising membership for $10/month. I was talked into paying $20/month in order to not have a cancellation fee and to have a lower annual fee (which, by the way, I was charged for only a month into my membership). I went this route because I knew I would be moving in about 6 months.
In December, before I moved, I went into the Dogtown location to cancel my membership. I was told that I had to do it online. Once I got online it said that I had to send a certified letter to cancel. They clearly try to make it as difficult as possible to cancel.
After I sent the letter I received an email stating that I would be charged the cancellation fee. I called the number to headquarters to dispute this charge. The woman I spoke with, Melissa ID#7005, was extremely rude, demeaning, and argued with me/over me the whole time. She absolutely refused to even consider my situation and even seemed to take satisfaction in being as unhelpful as possible.
Now that I have searched the company online I see that this type of situation is very common. I feel that this is a very shady company with deceptive tactics to get people to sign up, they intentionally make it very difficult to quit, and they have very unhelpful and discourteous customer service. Bottom line--any gym is better than Club Fitness!
