The Fair Debt Collection Practices Act (FDCPA) prohibits debt collectors from communicating false information to a credit reporting agency. That would include communicating information about a debt without also noting the fact that the subject of the debt has disputed it.
Additionally, under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) if you dispute the information with the credit reporting agency, that same debt collector has to conduct a reasonable investigation into your dispute. If this process fails, you can present a claim against the debt collector for violations of both of these statutes.
You may want to hire an attorney to help you with this dispute if you have not had any luck on your own.
