New Triple Play Customers Beware!

This is the clearly written promotion directly from Comcast's website as of today: It was copied and pasted into a word document while I was on the phone with "customer service" at Comcast so I could ensure that it was time and date stamped in case they tried to change the writing on their website.

Comcast, the nations leading residential broadband Internet provider, and video game pioneer, Nintendo, have teamed up to offer an exclusive deal available to new Comcast Triple Play customers. From today until August 17, 2008, those who sign up for Comcast Preferred Plus or Premier Triple Play package* will receive a complimentary Wii system, merging together the joy of a super-fun video gaming experience with the power of super-fast Internet speed.

The partnership between Comcast and Nintendo will give new qualifying Triple Play customers a free Wii system and it will also allow them to hook up their Wii to Comcast High-Speed Internet for great online experiences:

Visit the Wii Shop Channel to download classic Nintendo games or discover new exciting titles made for Wii

By connecting to our high-speed Internet, it will be easy for our customers to access all the fun content and features their Wii has to offer online, said Greg Butz, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Product Development. The Wii offers something for everyone, so pairing the Comcast Triple Play with the Wii system provides great entertainment value for the entire family.

Comcasts high-speed Internet connects Wii owners with their friends all over the world, said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of Americas executive vice president of Sales & Marketing. In addition to playing video games, people can surf the Internet, share family photos, and check the news or weather. The Wii is home to a multitude of fun Internet based entertainment and informational options.

Comcast customer service is now double and "triple" talking themselves out of having to offer the free Wii game consoles. As the wording is clearly stated "New Comcast Triple Play Customers", the 3 scripted reps that I spoke with today claimed a few different things in order to not fufill a now widely advertised campaign.

1. I was told that this offer is only good to "New" customers. When pressed further, I was told that I don't qualify since I had "standard" cable, which according to them means that I get at least 22 chanels. Mind you, I don't have digital cable, no cable box, and in my area, Comcast is the only provider. Apparently, if I had "basic" cable that would have been a different story and I would have qualified. ??? Irrelevant since the offer states "New Comcast Triple Play Customers" not those with "standard" cable.

2. I was then told, by another person something slightly different. Since I am a customer of one of the services, (ie. standard cable through my wall), I am technically not a new customer so I don't qualify for a new Wii. Again, irrelevant since their offer states that it is for "New Comcast Triple Play Customers".

3. I then was directed to a gentleman, Mike, an apparent supervisor who then told me that I could go to another part of their website, "services" and read the fine print on what Comcast provides as services overall. For the third time, I DON't CARE! The offer you put in writing, on Comcast.com and on national tv states that if you sign up as a "NEW TRIPLE PLAY CUSTOMER" between July 28, 2008 and August 17, 2008, with a 2-yr service agreement, you are entitled to receive a FREE Wii game console. I asked for direct contact information for Greg Butz, Senior Vice President of Marketing & Product Development for Comcast and was told by "Mike" that he didn't have that available. Hence, I am writing here in this forum in the hopes that I may say another person the disappointment and runaround that they too will likely get when they sign up for Comcast's Triple Play package during this time frame, hoping that they will also be receiving a free Wii game console.

I have done research and found that other people have been told different things so that they don't qualify.

I suspect that there are many ways that Comcast has in order to make sure that there are no qualifying areas or qualifying customers. I would love to read any other feedback from others out there that have also been caught up in this.

Marketing is not that difficult to understand

I am not a comcast employee, but I have had almost every position including corporate in retail for over 16 years.I also headed up many marketing and promotional programs, so that may make me an ideal candidate to rebutt the report that was made .Obviously the person who wrote the report on comcast scaming new customers does not understand the simple criteria which he clearly states he does NOT meet. Yes sir, the promotion does state "new triple play customers" will get the free console. We all know that all promotions always have certain criteria we must meet in order to get whatever it is that they are giving away. First: the triple play program is a comcast SERVICE. Second: You clearly state that the only cable service in your area is provided by comcast to which you are subscibed to. Do you see where I am going with this yet? And third: being that you are a CURRENT comcast customer with comcast SERVICE makes you inelligible for their promotion to NEW customers. Just because it's called "triple play" does not mean you adding two more of their services now qualifies you as a NEW triple play customer. I do understand that it is pretty unfair that you do not have more than one company to choose from for cable service, But don't get upset with comcast for something that is out of their control. If anything you should be greatfull that you even have cable service in your area at all! It's people like you that make it imperative to add the "fine print" to anything any company or business wants to promote, sell or just plain "give away". To you it's soo easy to say gimme, gimme like a spoiled child without even considering the big $ it takes to even set up a program like the one comacast is promoting. If everyone and their mother is screaming out SCAM,SCAM what would even be the point of promoting a service. What it comes down to is,promotions are made to bring in NEW business in order to profit. Not to needlessly throw $ away. So certain rules must be made to protect the business. Bottom line: NEW CUSTOMER!! Is it really that difficult to understand?

Just buy the Wii and forget about the stupid promotion through Comcast. You're going to end up paying more through this promotion, anyway. You're wasting your time trying to fight Comcast.

As a former customer of Comcast, I advise caution when dealing with them. Today's Cnet news item(http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10004508-38.html) caught my eye. Clearly, the facts presented forewarn us that this company probably will do whatever it takes to serve their own interests first. The article discusses Comcast's past network restrictions management and of initially convincing users, there was a problem with their Internet connection or the application.
