Compass bank has taken to preying on poor people. Used to, you had to have good credit to open an account. Now, they like low credit people because of their $30 per return check fee.

A single woman I am friends with showed me a statement of hers from them. She had a $350 ck. bounce from her ex-boyfriend. This caused her account balance to be around $110. She had a $190 ck., a $90 ck., and 2 around $50 each. Now, instead of paying the 2 $50 cks. and bouncing the other 2 they structered it to where they ALL bounced even though the small cks. were paid at the bank BEFORE the 2 larger cks. $120 in return ck. fees plus return ck. fees from the places she wrote her cks. to. Had she previously bounced cks. at this institution? Yes, twice. Both times previously they applied the checks before the deposits, bounced the cks., applied the deposit and collected their fees.

Since then I have learned this is common practice at Compass Bank. They are making a FORTUNE off the poor people who can least afford those fees. That they haven't been caught gives testament to the fact the people they are preying on have the least means and ability to pursue remedies.

I have been victimized too! Bruce Watterson, Florida State Department of Consumer Financial Services

Hello there - unfortunately I have been victimized too. (I posted my complaint on this site too. Do a search for Compass, Compass Bancshares, Inc. and you'll see mine. I hope this gets someone's attention because Compass refuses to accept responsibility). To summarize: I have received nearly $600 in NSF over the past 3 months for something they call "priority" when posting checks, visa debits, atms etc to your account. They pay the highest amount first then the next highest and so on. But what they forget is when you use a Visa debit or atm those are "true verified and available" funds. They approve the amount to be charged but when it comes to posting to the account they "bounce" if a check comes in a day later or so forth that is a penny higher. THIS IS ILLEGAL BANKING AND I'M FILING A REPORT. I invite you do the same by contacting this guy from the Florida State Department of Consumer Financial Services. His name is Bruce Watterson (in fact talked to him today and I'm sending a brief statement to what Compass is doing to my account and the huge NSF fees - fees on fees etc). Below is the address: Consumer Financial Services Bruce Watterson 200 E. Gaines St. Tallahasee, FL 32399-0362 Please - write him and we'll attack this from more than one point of view. The state will have to audit Compass
