I signed up for Directv in February 2012.  By agreeing to their two year contract agreement they offered a discount from their imaginary, so called normal pricing.  These appeared on my bill as credits each month to reflect the monthly price that I was quoted would be my total cost.  By early July I had experienced over 30 outages and Directv agents refused to do anything about it.  They had obviously been trained to keep putting customers off.  Even after an agent had told me the next time I experienced trouble with the signal they would send a technician to my home, it took another month and several more outages before they would agree to do so.  When they finally agreed to send someone out the free period had expired and now it would cost me $50 to have the system checked.  When the tech arrived he evaluated the install and determined that I was experiencing problems due to the fact the dish receiver was facing a bunch of electric wires going down my alley.  He also determined that there was no location on my property where a satisfactory signal could be received.  He called a supervisor and he confirmed the electric wires would prevent a proper signal from being received.  I cancelled my Directv service and returned the equipment as per their requirements and waited for my final bill.  I received the final bill and had a $54.75 credit.  I waited to receive the credit, but it never came.

When I received another bill, also showing the credit, I called to find out when it would be issued.  I was told that they had sent a credit the day before to my credit card.  When the credit never showed up on my account I called back to make sure they had the right account.  They then told me that instead of sending me the credit, they used the money to offset the credits they had issued me each month on my bill, since I did not complete the two year contract.  If they were able to provide me with decent service I would have continued to fulfill the contract, but since they could not I should not be penalized for discontinuing service early.  They had quoted me a certain monthly price for their service and I feel they should honor that agreement.  However, they set it up with monthly discounts so that they have a way to keep money they owe when they cannot deliver proper service.  This practice is not only dishonorable, but should be illegal.  If you are thinking of dropping Cable and going with Directv, be aware that if it rains, snows or is even overcast with clouds you will drop signal and they will not be quick to fix the problem.  Since their customer service offices are many states away you cannot even address the problem in person.  If you want TV that goes in and out and do not worry about getting access to technical service when needed, go ahead and sign up for Directv.  If you want TV that works and real people to talk with if you have a problem stay with Cable.
