We signed up a 12-month DVR package with DirecTV which is bundled with Qwest's phone and DSL service in Feb 2006. It was clearly advertised the term was for 1-year commitment. I still have the copy of the our sales receipt which clearly stated, "You agreed to maintain your current subscription... for 12 consecutive months (24 consecutive months for advanced receiver) without interruption". In addition, "If you fail to maintain your programming commitment, you agree that DIRECTV may charge you a prorated fee of up to $150 for standard equipment or up to $300 for advanced receivers". So, ours is only standard equipment which requires 12 months contract.

When we disconnected the service in Feb 2007, DirecTV said we had committed to 2-year contract as we have added the DVR. But they showed no proof and just kept sending us a bill for $150 early termination fee. They also sent us to collection agent threatening us to pay. We had sent them a letter from our attorney which states that under the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act and Fair Credit Billing and Reporting Acts, DirecTV has to cease and desist all attempts to collect the debt. However, they still keep sending us collection letters threatening to cause us adverse effect on our credit. We are very ripped off by DirecTV.

DVR's do in fact carry a two year contract

Dvrs and hd equipment do carry a two year agreement. It is clearly says on the customer agreement 12 months for standard recievers and 24 months for advanced and indicates dvr and hd as advanced. I would recommend in the future you read all the paper work you are provided with, as in customer agreements confirmation letters before signing up with any new company. Directv is very clear on our contracts because they dont want you to have the incorrect information. If Qwest told you anything diffrent then you would really need to try and fight them they gave you wrong information not Directv.

Seems like DVR's are advanced equipment and they should be coming after your for 300 dollars but are going after 150 as a courtesy. You should have asked for a definition of standard and advanced equipment. Are you telling your attorney the whole story??
