My wife and I signed up with AT&T nearly 2 years ago for their bundle package including phone, internet, and satellite television. The satellite TV was provided through Dish Network. We call them about a year and a half into the contract to inquire about their cancellation policies. We are informed that the cancellation fee is pro-rated, meaning the farther along you are in your contract, the smaller the fee will be.

Funds recently became tight, so with about 2 months left on our contract, we decided to cancel Dish Network. We receive a bill for the full cancellation fee ($175) as well as for the month that it was supposedly canceled. My wife gave them a call and was informed that, no, the cancellation fee is not pro-rated and we have to pay the full amount.

To top it all off, they told us that we have to climb up on our roof, remove a piece off of the satellite dish, and mail it back to them. If we fail to do so, we will be charged the full price for the dish. Now, we have a pretty tall townhouse, and climbing up there is no easy task without the right equipment. We informed them of the difficulty and the risk this posed, but they didn't seem to care. We weren't their customer anymore, so why should they? We asked if they ever send someone out to remove the piece off of the dish that they themselves installed. We were told that they didn't.

So, not only did they lie to us about the cancellation policy, they threatened to charge us for the dish if we did not climb on our roof, retrieve part of the dish, and mail it to them. Maybe they don't care because we are not customers anymore, but all they're doing is ensuring that I will never use Dish Network again. After all, I'm not canceling TV for good, just until our financial situation improves. When that happens, I'm looking elsewhere.

the contract now are pro rated. im not sure about 2 years ago though. im not sure what agreement they have with att. but in any case at the time of the installation. you should have signed 2 contracts . one was your copy. chances are that you also leased the equipment and it never did belong to you. dish network gets a copy and the dealer keeps the original copy. i really doubt that att has a copy. since they called dish network to do the install. att probably was billing you for the programming. but i would contact them both for a copy. the contract will tell all you need to know. contact the state attorney general to see what the laws are about you receiving a contract. when you were first billed you should have bill for 2 months up front. they kept you one month ahead. what happened to the extra month you paid for. i also heard on the news a few weeks ago. that att dropped dish network for poor customer service ( isnt that kind of like the pot calling the kettle black ) .they ended up going back to directv....but you cant believe everything you hear.
